'Green Book' Writer Nick Vallelonga Apologizes for Anti-Muslim Tweet

Nick Vallelonga is speaking out to apologize for an anti-Muslim tweet he wrote in 2015.

The Green Book writer, and real-life son of the movie’s subject Tony Lip, won two Golden Globes over the weekend for his work on the film.

Vallelonga replied to Donald Trump‘s claim about 9/11 on Twitter and said he saw “Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down.”

“I want to apologize,” Vallelonga said in a statement this week. “I spent my life trying to bring this story of overcoming differences and finding common ground to the screen, and I am incredibly sorry to everyone associated with Green Book.”

“I especially deeply apologize to the brilliant and kind Mahershala Ali, and all member of the Muslim faith, for the hurt I have caused,” he continued. “I am also sorry to my late father who changed so much from Dr. Shirley’s friendship and I promise this lesson is not lost on me. Green Book; is a story about love, acceptance and overcoming barriers, and I will do better.”

Mahershala won Best Supporting Actor at the Globes this weekend.
