John Singleton Dead - 'Boyz N The Hood' Director Dies at 51

John Singleton has sadly died at the age of 51.

The screenwriter, producer and director, known best for Boyz N The Hood, died on Monday (April 29) after being taken off of life support earlier in the day by his loved ones following a massive stroke nearly two weeks prior.

Among his many achievements, he was the first African-American nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director.

“We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time,” his family said in a statement.

A family spokesperson confirmed that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“Like many African Americans, Singleton quietly struggled with hypertension. More than 40% of African American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe. His family wants to share the message with all to please recognize the symptoms by going to Heart.org,” the family urged earlier in the day upon delivering the life support news.

Our thoughts are with John‘s loved ones at this difficult time.
