Willow Smith Is Going to Spend 24 Hours in a Box to Express Her Anxiety

Willow Smith is using performance art to express herself.

The 19-year-old artist and daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith will be spending 24 hours inside of a box at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary beginning at 9 p.m. PT on Wednesday (March 11) in Los Angeles.

The immersive performance art exhibit will take place alongside collaborator and boyfriend, Tyler Cole.

“We’re on this planet and anything could happen, like the thing that just happened with Kobe [Bryant]? That was really a knife in the heart. Every moment is precious. And I think everyone has a fear of just not knowing what’s going to happen in the future, not knowing if you’re on the right path, not knowing if you’re making the right choices,” Willow said to the LA Times of the performance piece.

Their collaborative album, The Anxiety, will be released after the performance piece.

“We were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be so interesting if we could personify this experience? Starting from being scared and feeling alone and moving to a place of acceptance and joy,” she went on to explain.

They plan to spend three hours on eight emotions: paranoia, rage, sadness, numbness, euphoria, strong interest, compassion and acceptance.

The box has one glass wall for viewers, while the other three walls are made of canvas for writing or drawing. They also don’t plan on talking: “We might grunt or scream — it’s going to be very primal,” she said.

There will be a live feed as well, and the room next to the installation will have books and places for donations to various mental health organizations.

“I’m doing this because I’m inspired by this idea and I see that anxiety around me is an epidemic and people don’t talk about it. And so as long as it’s bringing awareness and a positive light to the darkness, it doesn’t matter if you don’t enjoy it,” she said.
