'The Crown' Inspires New Dramatic Series Focused On Swedish Royal Family

Sweden’s Royal family is reportedly the focus of a new series just like Netflix’s The Crown.

The Scandinavian country’s TV4 and streaming service C More are currently developing a series based on King Carl XVI Gustaf‘s life and rise to the throne.

He was just 27 when he became sovereign in 1973.

“I’ve personally never been a fan of monarchy, but I remember reading the treatment of six or seven pages while I was on a flight. As I was reading those pages, I started crying because it was so strong,” Josefine Tengblad, the head of drama at TV4 and C More shared about the series in development to Variety. “It’s a little bit like The King’s Speech in the way that it portrays someone who is being groomed to become someone he’s not, and is having people trying to change him.”

Åsa Lantz will co-write the show and has been researching the King for several years to prepare for it.

“Other kings and queens are said to have had an impact on world events. The history of our King is something different. Not as highlighted internationally but at least as dramatic and fascinating,” she says. “And for many of us, completely unknown.”

According to reports, the royal family have been informed about the project.

“As we understand it, it is planned as a drama documentary,” The Royal Court told newspaper Dagens Nyheter. “When it comes to documentaries, it is important that they are as close to the truth as possible, and that the facts are presented correctly. As for the dramatized part of the series, it is of course based on artistic freedom, something we have no control over.”

King Carl XVI Gustaf is married to Queen Silvia, and they have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

Victoria will reign after the King, and she’ll be followed by her own daughter, Princess Estelle, who is eight.
