Matthew McConaughey Shares the Story Behind His 'Titanic' Audition

Matthew McConaughey is sharing some new details about auditioning for Titanic!

During an interview on Rob Lowe‘s podcast Literally with Rob Lowe, the 51-year-old actor opened up about the audition process for the 1997 James Cameron film, which he wrote about in his new book Greenlight.

“So I went and read with Kate Winslet and it was not one of the auditions—they filmed it so it was like into screen test time,” the Interstellar star shared. “After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me and on when we got outside they were like, ‘That went great.’ I mean, kind of like hugs. I really thought it was going to happen.”

Despite the seemingly successful audition, Matthew was never offered the role. The actor added, “For a while I was saying like, ‘Who was my—I gotta find that agent. They’re in trouble. I did not ever get the offer.”

Matthew would later go on to star alongside Titanic’s leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese film Wolf of Wall Street.

“He wants you to win,” Matthew said of Leo. “Not everyone is like that. They don’t want you to win.”
