Mark Tuan Opens Up About His Solo Debut Album, Got7's Reunion & Maintaining His Smile (Interview)

Mark Tuan Interview

You’ve been incredibly busy in the past few months, including the triumphant return of Got7. It’s not very common for groups to leave their agencies, stay in communication, and successfully reunite and relaunch for yet another comeback. It was all so incredibly impressive and successful! What do you think it is about Got7 that helped you all to stick together and pull this all off?

We made a promise not only to each other, but to the fans that we will be back and that it would not be the end of Got7. With everyone’s solo activities and schedules, it took a while to get everyone together but in the end, we made it happen.

There’s also your solo album coming out at the end of August. Fans are obviously very eager to hear the album. Is there anything you could tell us about the themes, lyrics and/or sounds to expect?

With this album, I wanted to express a side of me that I’ve never really shown. All songs are very personal to me and were written about certain times in my career in Korea. I’ve been experimenting with different sounds so you will hear some familiar and different genres on this album!

After all these years, this is your official solo debut. What are you hoping to communicate about yourself as an artist with your first record?

With this record, I want to show a vulnerable side of me that everyone can relate to.

Are there any artists that have inspired your solo project – visually, musically, or promotional campaign-wise?

Yes, there are a lot of artists that have influenced me. From Eminem to Justin Bieber, The Kid Laroi, Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, and many more.

Unlike many new artists who release a debut album, you’ve had years of experience already in the music industry. What’s something you’ve learned in your experiences that has affected the way you’ve prepared this album?

Being prepared and having a plan really helped a lot. Also having a team that shares the same goals and vision as me. With me being independent now, I realized that there’s so many moving parts in this industry that requires everyone to be on top of their game.

How have the members of Got7 reacted to your solo career?

They have been very supportive!

Have any Got7 members given you good advice or critical feedback?

Yes! They will always be honest with what I do and vice versa. So far, they like the route that I’m going with my music and are always encouraging me.
