Zooey Deschanel Calls Out Critics & Rejects The 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' Label

Zooey Deschanel is calling out critics.

The 42-year-old actress, who starred in 500 Days of Summer, New Girl, Elf and more, has opened up in a new interview and clapped back at those who are calling her a “manic pixie dream girl”.

While speaking to The Guardian, Zooey looked back at some of her most popular roles and revealed how she became the face of the “manic pixie dream girl” trope following her role in 500 Days of Summer.

“I don’t feel it’s accurate,” she said of people still labeling her as such and typecasting her. “I’m not a girl. I’m a woman.”

Zooey added that while “it doesn’t hurt my feelings, but it’s a way of making a woman one-dimensional and I’m not one-dimensional.”

“I think the tendency is still to make women one-dimensional, so you have to add dimension, if you can,” she continued. “The more screen time a female character gets, the more space there is to show complexities, but there has been a shift, so I’m optimistic.”

Just last month, Zooey gave a shout out to both her ex-husband, Jacob Pechenik, and current beau, Jonathan Scott, for Father’s Day.
