Dominic West has revealed that King Charles III‘s private secretary has reached out to him about his portrayal of the royal in Netflix’s The Crown.

At the time he accepted the role, Dominic was an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust.

Started by the now King in the 1970s, the organization focuses on helping young people in the United Kingdom who are experiencing issues such as homelessness or mental health crises by offering financial and educational resources.

Dominic is still an ambassador for the charity, however, explained to the outlet that he actually offered to resign his role, and that it was rejected.

The private secretary who was serving Prince Charles at the time, Sir Clive Alderton, told him to do what he liked.

“‘You do what you like, you’re an actor. It’s nothing to do with us,’” he said he was told, adding that it was his belief King Charles III held a similar opinion.

Since he’s been an ambassador, Dominic has met the King several times over the years, which has helped him in his portrayal.

“I’ve been in a line to shake his hand a few times and it’s fascinating. It’s very useful to meet the character you’re playing, obviously,” he shared.
