Tyler Perry Refused to Attend Goddaughter Lilibet's Christening in the UK with Royal Family

Tyler Perry is speaking out about the reasoning behind his decision.

The 53-year-old producer, who was recently revealed to be the godfather of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s daughter Lilibet, spoke out in their docuseries on Netflix, Harry & Meghan.

During his appearance, he revealed why he didn’t attend the christening of his goddaughter.

“I’m not a royal watcher, I don’t really pay attention to a lot of stuff,” he said in his first appearance on-camera on the docuseries.

“But I saw something about her father [posing for the paparazzi]. I found it to be hurtful if he were my father. And I couldn’t even imagine this woman finding the man that she loved, the man of her dreams, and him being a prince, and then to walk into all of that madness and need the security of family and then have your father do some horrible things,” he continued.

A few years went by without further contact between himself and Meghan and Harry.

“And then one day when we were in Canada I had called him,” Meghan revealed.

“Finally, after years at that point. [It was] the first time we ever spoke. And I was just a wreck, I was crying and crying. Like sometimes it’s easier to just open up to someone who knows nothing at all. And that was that moment with me and Tyler.”

Their ongoing relationship from that point led to him becoming Lilibet’s godfather.

“They were pretty serious on the phone and I am like, ‘OK, what’s going on?’ and they said, ‘Well, we would like for you to be Lili’s godfather.’ I had to take a minute to take that in, and I thought I’d be honored, absolutely be honored,” he recalled.

Tyler also admitted that he refused to travel to the UK for her christening.

He said that his reason was that he didn’t want to “do all of that in the church with them and figure all of that out,” implying that the fussing around the royal family was what put him off.

“Maybe we can do a private ceremony here and let that be that. And if you have to do it there, then that’s OK,” he continued.

Tyler Perry let the couple stay in his $18 million Los Angeles estate after they first moved to America in 2020, an event since dubbed “Megxit.”

In March of 2020, as COVID hit, Tyler reached out to Meghan and Harry when their location in Canada was publicly revealed and he offered to let them stay in his home in California, complete with security.

Tyler told them, “You’re not gonna stay for a week. You’re gonna stay for as long as you need. And I’m gonna get you there safely, and I’m gonna keep you there safely. Until you have somewhere to go.”

Meghan also revealed that the royal family insisted on her writing that letter to her father, and Harry says their legal battle with the tabloids led to her miscarriage.
