'Shrek 5' Could Happen With Original Voice Cast

Shrek 5 with the original cast is a definite possibility.

Chris Meledandri, Illumination founder and CEO, sat down with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto to discuss the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Chris also talked about the Shrek movies and has been trying to bring back Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, the film’s original voice cast for Shrek 5.

“It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements,” Chris told Variety. “And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”

Earlier this year, Eddie Murphy said he would be down to reprise the role of Donkey in an instant.

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” he said.

“You know, they did Puss in Boots [movies]… They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots,” he said. “I love Puss in Boots, but he isn’t funnier than Donkey.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie director spoke out ahead of the film’s release, out on April 5, addressing some criticism of the movie and its casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario.
