Steven Spielberg Reviews 'Indiana Jones 5,' the First Film He Didn't Direct in the Franchise

Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The 76-year-old director decided to step away from the project in 2020 and instead was directed by James Mangold.

“Bob Iger had a screening for a lot of the Disney executives, and I came to the screening along with the director James Mangold. Everybody loved the movie. It’s really, really a good Indiana Jones film. I’m really proud of what Jim has done with it,” he said at the 2023 TIME100 Summit.

“When the lights came up I just turned to the group and said, ‘Damn! I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these,” Steven said as the audience laughed.

The E.T. director started the Indiana Jones franchise in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark and also directed three sequels: 1984’s Temple of Doom, 1989’s Last Crusade and 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. All of the film starred Harrison Ford.

Disney just confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the end of the franchise. The movie is set for a theatrical release on June 30.
