During her appearance, where she was joined by Susan Dickinson, head of the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) for World FTD Awareness Week, Emma told the program that she doesn’t know if Bruce is aware of his condition at all.

“It’s hard to know,” she said. “It’s hard to know.”

Emma continued, “What I’m learning is that dementia is hard. It’s hard on the person diagnosed. It’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say that this is a family disease, it really is.”

She also spoke about how she is coming to terms with it, saying that the diagnosis came as both a” blessing and the curse”, as “to sort of finally understand what is happening…[but] it doesn’t make it any less painful.”

“Just being in the acceptance is, and just being in the know of what is happening to Bruce, just makes it a little bit easier,” Emma adds.

Emma also spoke about her dislike of the word ‘caretaker’ and instead, is a ‘care partner.’

“He is my partner, so I am his care-partner.”

Just last month, Emma opened up about her own struggles in that role in an emotional video.
