8 Celebs Who Have Expressed Strong Opinions on Margot Robbie & Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' Oscars Snubs

John Cena

John Cena plays Merman Ken in Barbie and was asked about the omissions while on the red carpet at the U.K. premiere of his new movie Argylle.

“I try to operate under the construct that, ‘What can I control?’” the actor told People. “And I can’t switch anything that’s happened.”

He added, “I can let my friend Margot and I can certainly let Greta know that awards aren’t the only metric to success and they have made a movie that has done tremendous business and changed a lot of lives in the process. And I think that’s one hell of an achievement.”

David Spade took to TikTok to share his thoughts on Margot and Greta not being nominated. The 59-year-old Father of the Year actor explained that Ryan‘s team probably strategically chose the supporting actor category because they thought he had a better chance there.

Margot is 1000 percent the lead, and she was great,” he said in his Wednesday (January 24) video. “And if she got nominated, no one would blink…Greta Gerwig coulda been the director. That movie is so interesting and different, but he got it. I know they say, ‘Oh, it’s because he’s a man,’ and maybe. It’s also because that category is slightly, I think, easier.”

David also noted that comedic films and actors often don’t get the respect they deserve. “The other problem is, it’s a comedy, and comedies are notoriously treated kind of sh-tty in the showbiz world – especially Academy world,” he continued. “Barbie was definitely not just a comedy, but at first glance, it is.
