Hamilton's Phillipa Soo Explains Her Gasp at the End of the Show

Phillipa Soo plays the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in the filmed version of Hamilton and she’s opening up about her character’s big moment in the final seconds of the show.

SPOILER ALERT – Hamilton ends with the song “Who Live, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” in which Eliza explains how she is working to keep her husband’s legacy alive after his death. Right before the lights go down at the end, Eliza lets out a gasp.

Phillipa opened up about that moment during an AOL Build interview years ago.

“People are like, ‘Is it Eliza going into heaven? Is she seeing Alexander? Is she seeing God? What is it?’ And it’s kind of all of those things. Sometimes, it’s literally, I look out and I see the audience, and that’s what it is, but I think, that idea of ‘transcendence’ is present in all of that,” Phillipa said. “Whether it’s in Eliza’s mind, or in Phillipa‘s mind, they’re both one and the same, which is beautiful about that moment.”
