Amber Tamblyn Defends Tweet About Hasidic Man Trying to Run Her Over

Amber Tamblyn is speaking out to defend her tweets about a Hasidic man who tried to run her and her baby over with his car.

The 34-year-old actress was walking around Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon (March 4) when she said a Hasidic man in a grey van tried to hit her in the crosswalk.

“If anyone in Brooklyn near the intersection of Washington Ave and Atlantic Ave just saw a Hasidic man in a grey van try to hit a woman and her baby in a stroller as she crossed a crosswalk, honking and touching the stroller with the car’s bumper, please DM me. That woman was me,” Amber tweeted. She later added, “Thank you everyone for your kind words of support today. We are fine. But this is not the first time a man from the Hasidic community in NYC has attempted to harm me or other women I know. Any woman riding a bike through South Williamsburg can attest. I hope this guy is caught.”

Amber faced some backlash on Twitter from people who felt she was generalizing the entire community of Hasidic people with her tweet. Some called her anti-Semitic.

When someone replied with a similar experience she responded, “I’m so sorry to hear this, Benjamin. And I completely agree with you here and will not be silenced or bullied or intimidated by anyone who wants to twist my words into anything other than what it is.”

Amber later clarified, “I’ll say this once. To anyone suggesting I’m anti-Semitic for identifying a man as Hasidic who hit my daughter’s stroller in a crosswalk with a car then rolled his window down, wagged his finger and told me ‘Watch where you’re going’: I will not be bullied or intimidated by you.”

Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones & More Join Forces To Represent Time's Up at Makers Conference 2018!

Natalie Portman and Rashida Jones are all smiles as they pose for a photograph backstage at The 2018 MAKERS Conference at NeueHouse Hollywood on Monday (February 5) in Los Angeles.

The ladies were in attendance to represent Time’s Up.

Joining Natalie and Rashida at the panel were filmmaker Ava DuVernay, CAA motion picture agent Maha Dakhil, Katie McGrath, Grammy-winning music video director Melina Matsoukas, entertainment lawyer Nina Shaw and writer-producer Jill Soloway.

“Usually we’re the only woman at work. Like many other industries, we walk onto a nearly all male set and we’re usually alone and we rarely get to interact with each other,” Natalie said (via THR) about the movement bringing together women. “If you’re the only woman in the room it isolates you and prevents you from sharing stories so if there are predators you don’t talk to each other. It’s empowering to be in a room, on the same team, and refuse to be pitted against each other. There’s not only one spot–we’re going to make room for all of us. It’s really powerful. And we have all these new friends.”

Natalie and the ladies also announced that, since the January 1st launch of Time’s Up, the organization has raised $20 million and received requests for legal aid from those who lack the means to defend themselves from workplace abuses — farm workers, hotel workers, steelworkers, and others.

Rose tweeted, “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”
