Cory Monteith‘s mother Ann McGregor is speaking for the first time in an interview since her son’s tragic death one year ago.

“The loss is horrendous … until three days ago I couldn’t look at a picture of Cory,” Ann, 63, said. “So there’s been progress.”

Ann also said she is in touch with Lea Michele via text and email. “She’s hurting too … you see the sadness,” Ann said. “I know her pain.”

“[When] Cory was 15, he did a code blue,” Ann said explaining his first overdose, “and I think that was the turning point. He had a lot of emotional things he was trying to figure out — lot of it was he really wanted a relationship with his father. I think when a child gets invalidated they keep reaching even harder. They want to find out why.”

Cory‘s mom also explained that he was getting ready to sign a lease in Vancouver before he died and he may have been thinking about leaving Hollywood. “I think he was easing himself out of it.”

Lea Michele has taken to social media to remember her late love Cory Monteith exactly one year after his tragic death.

“We hold you in our hearts today, and every day we remember your smile. We will love you and miss you always,” the 27-year-old actress tweeted with a photo of Cory.

Cory was just 31 years old when he was found dead in a hotel room after consuming a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol on July 13, 2013 in Vancouver, Canada.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been one year since Cory Monteith suddenly and tragically passed away.

Celebrities took to Twitter today to express their love for Cory and to remember their dear friend.

“I personally believe Cory was reborn into some other beautiful form a year ago today. I celebrate him and his life… Wherever that may be,” his co-star Matthew Morrison tweeted.

Meanwhile, Harry Shum Jr wrote, “I often think of the good memories I shared with Cory and it makes me smile. He was a one of a kind gentleman and will forever be missed.”

Lea Michele took to Twitter today to acknowledge the birthday of her late boyfriend Cory Monteith.

“The biggest heart and most beautiful smile.. In all of our hearts.. We love you so. Happy Birthday,” Lea captioned a lovely photo of her and Cory laughing together.

Cory would have been 32 years old today. We can’t believe he’s been gone almost a year. Happy birthday, Cory!

Lea also took a moment to acknowledge the holiday too. “Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful mommy Edith. Thank you for being the most caring & amazing mother in the world,” she wrote.

Check out this first listen of Lea Michele‘s touching song “If You Say So,” which is a tribute to her late boyfriend Cory Monteith.

“It’s the only song that no one’s heard. I can’t talk about it until people hear it. I just feel like people should hear it and I don’t know if I’m ever going to talk about it. It’s just one of those things where I understand what it means and you can take it or leave it. That song is for me,” the 27-year-old actress said about the song to V magazine, which is on her album Louder.

“I check my phone and wait to hear from you in a crowded room,” Lea sings in the ballad, “I thought we would grow old/Mirrors in the smoke/Left me here to choke.”

While the In Memoriam segment at awards shows is meant to be a moment to reflect and remember the stars we have lost in the past year, many fans were upset to see that Cory Monteith‘s name was misspelled during the 2014 Grammy Awards tribute last night.

The late Glee actor’s last name was spelled “Montieth” during the tribute, switching the placement of the “e” and the “i” in his name.

No other names were misspelled during the tribute and generally speaking, spelling mistakes don’t usually happen during these tribute segments.

FYI: Cory was nominated for three Grammys for his work on Glee – Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media in both 2011 and 2012, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Version)” in 2011.
