Pitch Perfect 2 opened to a massive $70.3 million at this weekend’s box office!

According to THR, the comedy sequel, starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Hailee Steinfeld, and more, already grossed more than the first Pitch Perfect did for its entire domestic run ($65 million).

Coming in at No. 2 was Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Nicholas Hoult, which opened to an impressive $44.4 million.

Taking the third spot was Avengers: Age of Ultron, starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, and Scarlett Johansson, which made an additional $38.8 million to bring its domestic total to $372 million.

Rounding out the top five were Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara‘s Hot Pursuit, and Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, which grossed $5.8 million and $3.6 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, I’ll See You in My Dreams, a comedy starring Blythe Danner, opened in limited release to $49,340 from three theaters for an average of $16,447.

Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are officially returning to star in the highly anticipated new movie Pitch Perfect 2, Universal Pictures has confirmed!

The ladies will reprise their roles as Becca and Fat Amy respectively, with Elizabeth Banks directing the film, set to hit theaters on May 15, 2015.

There is no word yet who else from the original film will return, but we suspect many of them will. Who wouldn’t want to be in the sequel, right?!

Plot details are also not available at this time, but the original film’s screenwriter Kay Cannon is returning to write the screenplay for the sequel. We are so so so excited for this movie!

Elizabeth Banks is set to make her feature film directorial debut with the highly anticipated movie Pitch Perfect 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 39-year-old actress will also be returning to star in the film in some sort of capacity alongside original film stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, who are likely to return.

“Elizabeth originated the idea for Pitch Perfect and was instrumental in making the first film such a huge success,” Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley said. “She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we’re thrilled that she is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2.”

Kay Cannon, who wrote the first smash hit movie, will be writing the sequel as well. Elizabeth and her husband Max Handelman will produce the film once again.
