Tim Burton Begins Production on 'Dumbo,' Debuts Set Photo

Production has begun on Tim Burton‘s upcoming live-action reimagining of the Disney classic Dumbo and the studio just shared a photo of the director on set!

Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green have been confirmed to star in the film alongside newcomers Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins in their first film roles.

Disney’s new live-action feature film Dumbo introduces Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.

Dumbo has a release date set for March 29, 2019.

Eva Green In Talks to Star in 'Dumbo' for Director Tim Burton

Eva Green is reportedly in talks to join the cast of the live-action Dumbo movie, which will be directed by Tim Burton.

The actress will play one of the four human leads in the film. Her role is described as a “trapeze artist who works for the head of the circus,” according to THR.

This will be the third project that Eva and Tim have worked on together, following last year’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and 2012′s Dark Shadows.

The new movie will feature live-action and CGI mixed together.

Tim Burton Addresses Lack of Diversity in Casting

Tim Burton has been criticized for lack of diversity in casting with regards to his new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Samuel L. Jackson does star in the film, but the large ensemble cast of the movie consists of mostly white actors.

“Nowadays, people are talking about it more,” Tim, 58, told Bustle of diversity in film. “…things either call for things, or they don’t. I remember back when I was a child watching The Brady Bunch and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let’s have an Asian child and a black – I used to get more offended by that than just – I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that’s great. I didn’t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.”

Samuel said he “noticed it,” but the lack of diversity in Tim‘s cannon of films didn’t deter him from tackling the role of Barron in the movies.

“I had to go back in my head and go, how many black characters have been in Tim Burton movies? And I may have been the first, I don’t know, or the most prominent in that particular way, but it happens the way it happens. I don’t think it’s any fault of his or his method of storytelling, it’s just how it’s played out. Tim’s a really great guy,” Samuel said.

Winona Ryder Attends Tim Burton's Hand & Footprint Ceremony!

Winona Ryder speaks on stage at Tim Burton‘s hand and footprint ceremony held at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres on Thursday (September 8) in Hollywood.

The 44-year-old Stranger Things actress starred in the 58-year-old director’s film Beetlejuice in 1988, as well as his movie Edward Scissorhands in 1990.

At the ceremony, Winona thanked Tim for starting off her career.

Tim understands the human heart in a way I have never seen certainly on screen,” Winona told ABC7. “He knows the pain of the misunderstood, of the odd and even of the mad. He celebrates them in a way that is both totally unique, so very, very tender, sometimes terrifying and very often hilarious.”

The two are slated to work together again on the upcoming Beetlejuice 2!
