Nicki Minaj's Grammys Performance - Watch Now!

Nicki Minaj levitates during her performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards held at Staples Center on Sunday (February 12) in Los Angeles.

The 29-year-old rapper kicked it off by confessing the lyrics to her new single, “Roman Holiday,” while sitting next to The Pope, the same man she walked with on the red carpet earlier in the evening.

The performance, called “The exorcism of [Nicki's alter ego] Roman,” was choreograhed by Laurieann Gibson and featured religious imagery, pyrotechnics, and backup dancers dressed as monks.

“OMG @ that chris brown performance. >>>>>>>> SHUT DOOWWWNNNN,” Nicki tweeted about another one of the night’s performers.

Nikki Minaj is an artist. This was art. I actually thing it was a great performance from a creativity and choreography standpoint. You claim that this act was terrible and talk about its religious content. You even have a handle that suggests you’re catholic….yet you start off your comment with OMFG??? How ironic is that??? #checkyourself

Ray! Ray! Ray! I could not have phrased your comment any better if I tried. I do not understand how such a prestigous event would allow such negative and offensive performance to be aired and viewed by millions. I pray that God has mercy when judgement comes because this was offensive to religion whatever the denomination. Can somebody say God help us in the name of JESUS! Have we forgotten blood was shed so that we could be redeemed from demonic torment but yet we entertain it!!! O.M.G.

Can I ask you guys a question….Is this her desperate way of getting some sort of acting job?

Nicki started off so talented with her catchy, spicy lyrics. What happened, Nicki? This is just bad. I mean, really bad.

    WriterChick Says:

WTF was that. Has this chick absolutely lost her f’n mind. Who’s consulting on this BS. And I’m sorry, did they not give any consideration that this type of performance the night after the world just lost a music icon, might be a little – I don’t know – OFF. This is just bad PR.

Not to mention the song is stupid as ****. One wonders, in this land of one hit wonders, how this is going to affect the rest of her career. I wouldn’t be shocked to watch it spiral out of control. Dummy.

    Cassandra Says:

Ok, I get it. “Roman” her alter ego is gay (stated by Minaj herself) and I’m assuming that this was all about how Catholics think it’s not okay to be gay and they try to give medication or they say that the person is possessed by a demon and this is all about how gays are ridiculed by religious groups. Overdone, yes I think so. Massive creep factor, absolutely. It practically gave me nightmares.

Lost some respect on that one Nicki. smh…

    Michelle Says:

I was sincerely distrubed by this performance. It’s offensive, I think it would have been fine if she didn’t incorporate the whole church thing it would have been a great great performance. But nicki needs attention.

Would have loved to see Lady Gaga instead.

this kind of garbage makes me think that the illuminati is real. because there’s no possible way she could get famous unless she payed someone, sold her soul, or sucked someones ****. a grammys performance???? wtf???????? this world is so brainwashed to except this as talent.

    @Lady T:

Whilst i think that the performance was garbage i don’t agree with Rays comments of censoring any who may “offend”. Additionally it is apparent that you find it offensive because of your beliefs, although in the interest of fairness it should be added that many people feel that the parts of religion that this performance attacked is equally offensive – that of claiming that homosexuality is wrong, or that it is some form of “disease”, and that mental illness or behaviour that falls outside of the “norm” is a religious issue and can be treated by exorcism.

Not condoning the performance, as i though it was awful, but to spout off about censoring because something is offensive is a bit rich. The Church should be as open to criticism as any other establishment, and recent events have proven how dangerous suppressing any type of criticism can be.

    TWW Says:

What’s confusing about Nicki Minaj’s performance? She performed The Exorcism of Roman. Or was that unclear with the title, and the mini video?
If you’re upset about this, then in retrospect you should also be mad at EVERY other single exorcism movie for the matter. Exorcisms involve the church, and priest. get over yourselves, and step your analytical skills up.

    windrider2 Says:

@zeeessss: Now we know why Gaga fired Laurieann Gibson. This piece was an incoherent mess. I guess Gibson isn’t nearly the genius she thinks she is because this was awful. And obviously Gibson is not the devout Christian she claims to be either because this was not merely an anti-Catholic screed.

  17. 117
    TWW Says:

@Alina: Uhh obviously it was the Exocism of roman, wth did you expect. Get over it, not that big of a deal.

  18. 118
    Chantal Says:

I don’t understand why people are so upset about this. How is this controversial?.. It’s not like the Catholic Church has been entirely innocent in the past. It’s actually quite the opposite. Has anyone ever thought that Nicki is making a statement about how people believe that being ‘exorcised’ could ‘take the gay out’ of someone? I mean… Roman IS her ‘gay male alter ego’… All I see is ignorant Catholic comments calling her the demon and pure evil and such. And really, I’m sure if she was the ‘demon’ she’d be doing a lot worse. Please screw your head on straight.

  19. 119
    TWW Says:

@Michelle: How do you not involve a priest with a exorcism. -__-”

Trying way too hard to be Lady Gaga? I dont get it… Its garbage!

  21. 121
    Paloma Says:

Ummmmm wtf was that.. im not even a strong catholic and i found that offensive. that was just wierd, i guess thats what shes going for though -_- and she sounded like shhiittt.

  22. 122
    Offended Says:

The whole act was done in VERY bad taste that I dunno where to start. The title of her song? I’m an Audrey fan so I wouldn’t want that same title as with her movie to be linked with such rubbish. Her escort? Even Muslims and Jews know that the Pope is someone who deserves great repect. Her performance? You call that music?! What in the world is wrong with the Academy? That piece of — shouldn’t have been allowed! And after Whitney’s tribute too!

    anon Says:

probably the worst attempt at an english accent i’ve heard in a long time..

  24. 124
    Mellie Says:

The difference between Nicki and Lady Gaga is that Gaga has actual talent. Nicki’s performance was utter trash and attention seeking for shock value.

  25. 125
    Wow Says:

@Ray: Exactly… and what about that other piece of trash at the superbowl… flipping off millions. Please, stop putting this worthless talent on stage.
