The song is a cover of Leonard Cohen‘s classic song, which he reportedly wrote about Janis Joplin.

“Ah but you got away, didn’t you babe, you just turned your back on the crowd,” Lana sings on the track. “You got away, I never once heard you say, I need you, I don’t need you, I need you, I don’t need you and all of that jiving around.”

on studio recordings she sounds great but she sounds so horrible when she is singing live… when there are no special effects to take out the nasal sound and breathiness. she needs to start singing IN HER RANGE… she is not a contralto and never will be. just accept it!

@jade:
She only sounds bad when she’s nervous. Go watch the itunes festival live.

She’s an amazing singer.

Prefer her original work though.

I don’t like it. She should stick to her own songs and leave the legends like Leonard Cohen alone.

did you only watch her in the SNL one? I’ve seen her perform live and her voice sounds great..well it’s your opinion this is mine and you know what they say “Some people dream about their weddings and some people dream about their funerals”

@jade: “when there are no special effects to take out the nasal sound and breathiness.” Can they do that? She always sings through her nose.

She sounds great and she captures melancholy so well. I love her live, she’s a special one.
