“He took me through how excited he was when he read the book, what was exciting for him, the geopolitical aspect of it,” Damon said Brad explained. “But when we started working on the script, a lot of that stuff had to fall away for the story to come together. We started shooting the thing before we locked down how it was going to end up, and it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.”

Exclusive: The Making of Brad Pitt’s World War Z, from Stunning Budget Overages and a Reshot Ending to Lots of On-Set Drama
    By Vanity Fair12:00 AM, April 30 2013

“He took me through how excited he was when he read the book, what was exciting for him, the geopolitical aspect of it,” screenwriter Damon Lindelof tells Vanity Fair contributor Laura M. Holson in the June issue of Vanity Fair of meeting Brad Pitt to discuss the star’s troubled zombie project, World War Z.

Lindelof says Pitt explained, “‘But when we started working on the script, a lot of that stuff had to fall away for the story to come together. We started shooting the thing before we locked down how it was going to end up, and it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.’” The actor asked him to watch an edit, and told him, “The thing we really need right now is someone who is not burdened by all the history that this thing is inheriting, who can see what we’ve got and tell us how to get to where we need to get.” Lindelof tells Holson the ending was abrupt and incoherent, but more importantly they were missing a large chunk of footage.

In her revealing report, Holson also speaks to director Marc Forster and Paramount executives Marc Evans and Adam Goodman about the many problems that plagued the set—which included re-writing and reshooting 40 minutes of the film to find a coherent ending—and, most astonishingly, how the budget ballooned to around $200 million.

While closing down the production in Malta, for instance, the wrap-up crew found a stack of purchase orders related to the cast and extras that had been casually tossed into a desk drawer and forgotten; the amount totaled in the millions of dollars. Marc Evans, president of production at Paramount, was shocked. He calls the overages an “unthinkable action” which needed to be addressed immediately. “It was literally insane. Adam [Goodman, president of the Paramount Film Group] and I believed we’d gotten out of Malta good, and I found out we weren’t. That is a nightmare.”

When it came time to watch the director’s cut, Holson reports, the room was silent. “It was, like, Wow. The ending of our movie doesn’t work,” says Evans. “I believed in that moment we needed to reshoot the movie.” After 10 minutes of polite discussion, everyone left. “We were going to have long, significant discussions to fix this,” he recalls thinking.
“I said to them, There are two roads to go down here,” says Lindelof. “Is there material that can be written to make that stuff work better? To have it make sense? To have it have emotional stakes? And plot logic and all that? And Road Two, which I think is the long-shot road, is that everything changes after Brad leaves Israel.” That meant throwing out the entire Russian battle scene—or about 12 minutes of footage—and crafting a new ending. “I didn’t think anyone was going to say, ‘Let’s throw it out and try something else,’ ” Lindelof recalls. “So when I gave them those two roads and they sounded more interested in Road B”—which meant shooting an additional 30 to 40 minutes of the movie—“I was like, ‘To be honest with you, good luck selling that to Paramount.’ ”

    Minnie Says:

Is brad pitt still relevant? i’m not a hater or anything just wondering. What has he done since inglorious ******** in 2008? Also what has angie done since changeling in 2008? Why are they still a big deal they are average actors at best. brad is no robert deniro and angie is no meryl. I think leo dicaprio, matt damon, clooney, affleck, hugh jackman, tom cruise are more famous than pitt. just saying. not a hater.

    Minnie Says:

I dont hate him but there isn’t even 1 movie of his that I was crazy about. I loved Inglorious ******** but that was because of tarantino, fassbender and christoph waltz. Mr and Mrs Smith was just a lame action movie with cheesey flirting and dialogue. And this movie, with that huge budget they could have come up with something more visually appealing right? from the trailer its another typical save the world, help my family stuff blows up crap….

    sarah Says:

Please don’t think I’m being sarcastic or looking for an argument. I have a question that I’ve wanted to ask Brad and Angie fans. Without the name callings, etc. Why is it that Brad and Angie had an affair while Brad was married to another woman. He left that woman and he and Angie flaunted their relationship, even going as far as being on a Magazine cover with a bunch of white/blonde kids running around. Then she was pregnant a few months later. I say this because Lea ann and Eddy get alotttt of hate because they started their affair while he was married. Why was there no backlash for Brad?

@Phool: Good morning Sis, yow are you today? Phool, this is a nice surprise this morning to get a new thread of “The Brad Pitt.” You know this is just going to send the trolls over the edge all day today. What a sad life trolls live, sitting in their basement waiting for Brad and Angelina’s new. As soon as we have BA news, trolls run over here to this thread to post nonsense. I know trolls will be living in he’ll the next two months. Brad will be doing lots of press for WWZ , sucks to be a troll. Phool, do you remember that commercial about EF Hutton? when Brad talks everyone listens. Same thing, when there is news about Brad all the trolls slithered out from under their rocks.

    Rose Says:

@ JPS: good morning JPS, how are you today? JPs, you know you will be in trouble now, lol. You provided proof yesterday that Brad and Angelina are still a family. Thanks for posting that link @#2203 from the previous page. I can’t believe Knox is writing and with such good penmanship. I remember he was born just a few years ago. Oh my, time flies. Take care JPS, have a great day.

The trolls have a new trsck. Trying to discredit Brads work. And tryjng to get fans to believe they are fans. Real fans know that is a great actor, partner and parent. He is gorgeous and relevant. Love the JP’s for real.

    More lies Sarah Says:

Sarah- you realize there was NO AFFAIR – even Aniston & her pals said there was NO AFFAIR. Brad simply left – once he was separated, he was free to date and make beautful babies with his sweet Angie (& buy houses & start charites & trusts with her as well). I think there is actual tape of Leann cheating, so that would be the difference right there.

    @emma/minnie Says:

Brad is not an over-the-top kind of actor like Cruise nor is he a Brando, DeNiro or Pacino BUT he is a way under rated actor. If you look at his performances in Seven, Benjamin Button, Tree of Life, Babel, etc. he gives solid performances that few actors could carry off. Particularly in BB and Babel. He knows what kind of role works for him and he is great at them. Many of his films are classics and in 50 years or so people will still be watching them and loving them…unlike so many other films out today.

If you were not blinded by your hate or dislike of him you would see this. There are many actors I don’t care for, but give kudos for good strong performances when they are due. Shame you are so narrow minded as you are missing out on some great film and great acting.

    Rose Says:

@Phool: Phool, I see someone here asking a stupid question this morning, “Is Brad Pitt still relevant”? Now Phool, would you take the time out of your busy day to leave a comment on a thread of someone you believe is not relevant? Only a trolls would seek out a thread of someone who is not relevant to them but still take the time to leave a comment.
