Lana Del Rey Can't Draw Inspiration from This Century's Music

Lana Del Rey flashes a smile while touching down at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday (June 11) in London, England.

The 27-year-old singer recently chatted with the New York Times about where she draws inspiration from, namely Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, and Eminem.

“Think of what’s going on now,” Lana said about how none of those artists emerged in this century. “Where am I going to get my inspiration? I couldn’t think of a thing today that I would really genuinely want to be a part of.”

“I have strong relationships with icons,” Lana added. “They’re probably my most meaningful relationships. They feel personal to me, but maybe that’s what being an icon is. Maybe everyone feels like they have that special relationship that’s different from everybody else, like you love them and you think you understand them more than anyone else, or you get them for who they really are.”

People may get angry with her comments, but she’s right. Artists and music today is not the same as it was even 20 years ago. A majority of it is pop and overproduced crap with no meaning.

No century as in the 21st century.

    Eminen came out in 99.

I agree with her as far as what they play on the radio but you can find great music on Songza. Blogged 50 is my fav station.

Love Raleigh Ritchie’s music (he plays greyworm on Game of Thrones).

She lost me with “Eminem”. He is a talentless douche.

She has a point but it’s funny that she separates herself from all of the other crap out there today. The girl is a bad Nancy Sinatra knock off. I doubt we’ll be remembering her 40 years from now.

I think she needs to step up her game a lot more if she’s gonna go around criticizing other people like that. Most of her songs are too similar to each other and her voice doesn’t keep my attention for long because she can’t take it to the next level where it needs to go. I wish her voice was more emotionally powerful and her melodies a lot better. She sings as if she’s just bored with everything, it might be cute for like one song but after a while she just ends up sounding like a female Leonard Cohen. I can only listen to one or two songs before I fall asleep.

it’s all in her lyrics/ and she has a quality voice/ frankly i think besides one time wonders like adele/ she has sustained herself well/ love her latest album esp. ‘cruel world’/ ‘gods and monsters’ ‘ride’/ all that will live on/ i trust in Lana actually making music that may be around for more than a year/ enjoy her work/ and eminem is a strong rapper/ he’s also a good ‘writer’ of lyrics/ i listen to music for all of its qualities/ not just a quick youtube watch/ unless they don’t make any ‘sense’ to me- of which there is tons out there

@Lalalanarama: Emotionally powerful? Listen to her version of “The Other Woman” or “Old Money” or “Is This Happiness” or “Noir” actually no that one’s crazy… but I love it. Lana like it or not, is an artist your lucky to get once in a life time. She’ll be appreciated more later…
It’s cool if you don’t get her or her music, but please people don’t ruin it for those of us that adore her.
