Dakota Fanning Wants People to Know You Don't Own Her

Dakota Fanning goes for a stroll around town with her boyfriend Jamie Strachan on Thursday (July 3) in the Soho neighborhood of New York City.

The 20-year-old actress recently talked to Town & Country magazine about how people sometimes act like they own her, but she doesn’t like it.

“Because people saw me grow up, there’s this weird sort of ownership that they feel for me and that is… difficult. Because it’s not real; it’s in their minds. People don’t know me as much as they think they do,” Dakota said. “I’ll be walking down the street and someone will say hello, and I’ll go, ‘Oh, hi!’ I’ll think I must know this person if they said hello, but then you realize, you don’t know them.”

”’Dakota said. “I’ll be walking down the street and someone will say hello, and I’ll go, ‘Oh, hi!’ I’ll think I must know this person if they said hello, but then you realize, you don’t know them.” ”’

My goodness, is she nuts? I say hello to people all the time that I don’t know. There is nothing strange about saying hello to people on the streets as you go about.

Is this heifer for real? Just because you speak to someone on the streets, does not mean you think you own them. Where the hell is she coming from. She sounds like a stuck-up, sheltered, beeotch.

    anthrax Says:

wow, she is so full of herself. No one wants to own you, spoiled kid. And I really hoped she’s gonna turned out different

and it’s also part of the job. never understand those hypocritical selebs who said they dont’ like attention. if you not ready to deal with it then get the hell out. there is a lot more of really important things to do.

she has a point. the hello comment was kinda silly or out of context but what she’s saying makes sense.

There is not such thing as an “exceptionally mature child”. Maybe she was exceptionally intelligent, obedient and/or disciplined which helped her avoid some of childhood’s mishaps, and cope with the dangers in the entertainment industry. She seems a bit out of touch – strangers saying hi and hello is a daily thing for most people.

Oh the price of being sort of famous…. Seriously? Does she think she is an A-lister who went from most loved child actress to very loved grown-up actress? No, Dakota. No one thinks they own you and you aren’t THAT big.

    Bellaboo Says:

Think someone just needs to let her know that the “hello” thing happens out of courtesy and not because she’s famous…

Hmmm, I wonder if this quote was taken out of context just for the sake of drama.
If not, what an obnoxious thing to say. You’re an actress, people recognize you. Boo-hoo if you think it’s creepy. It doesn’t speak to ‘ownership’ as much as just being a notable person.
Perhaps this little girl still has a lot of growing up to do?

AMERICA owns your lying ***** alien ass as long as you’re existing within AMERICA and using AMERICAN names. You don’t like that, GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is she on? I guess growing up an actress means that she doesn’t know normal every day things like…people greet each other all the time because its called being friendly. What an idiot! I thought she was going to smarter than that. Oh well.

Perhaps the question was unexpected and she could not come up with a better example in time. Saying how a hello leads her to think that people think they own her, however, is nothing short from absurd. A hello is just someone trying to be friendly? No? Or am I the crazy one here? Haha.

Dakota Dakota what can we say you grow up not so nicely, strangers saying hello to you doesn’t necessarily meant that they have to know you personally, They’re just being nice and polite because maybe and maybe not they recognized you. Don’t worry if I ever saw you personally I will call you a STUCK UP ***** would you prefer that?
You should remember you have a career in public and you should be worried when people will not say hello anymore , nor spare you a glance because your not relevant anymore.

    yesiam Says:

Ownwership? That’s a really blown out of proportion interpretation of someone’s greeting. No, they don’t you. They probaly just recognize you (or not) and think you’ll be nice enough to say “hi” back. Their mistake, if she just thinks of them as weirdos.

I ADORE Dakota, Im a fan and she usually always says the right things whenever I read any interviews shes done and shes exceptionally articulate about expressing her feelings…..but GAWD I have to admit what she said here could probably be the most stupidest thing ive ever read! In a way I get what shes trynna say about the ownership thing, but to use someone saying hello to you as an example?!?! Seriously?!? *facepalm*

I’ll save my “hello” for someone else who actually deserves it then.

Is this chick for real? Wow, she’s full of herself & for no reason cause i could walk right by her in the street & not even know who she is.

Did anybody read the part about how she hates little puppies and how she just loves the things Adolf Hitler did? 26 letters in the english lanuage I’m sure you nitwhits could come up with anything you want.

The dumbest generation the world has ever seen.

    This is what she said
“I’m super-happy that you’ve enjoyed watching me grow up. That’s cool,” but “because people saw me grow up, there’s this weird sort of ownership that they feel for me and that is…difficult. Because it’s not real; it’s in their minds.”
Very true statement just look at some of the tweets people post

Now people. Try hard to comprehend two paragraphs after she says.

“People don’t know me as much as they think they do,” she goes on. “I’ll be walking down the street and someone will say hello, and I’ll go, ‘Oh, hi!’ I’ll think I must know this person if they said hello, but then you realize, I don’t know them.” She laughs.

Notice she said someone will say hello, and I’ll go, ‘Oh, hi!’. ‘Oh, hi!’ not you don’t own me.

Now she say’s. I’ll think I must know this person if they said hello, but then you realize, I don’t know them.” She laughs.
She never said “you don’t own me” I guess nobody has ever had a person say hellow and look at tham and think do i know him/her?

    She finishes with.

“For the most part people are nice and respectful. But sometimes… Once I was sitting in a booth like this one and a girl sat down.” She gestures at the seat next to her, which means she was blocked in. Fanning giggles at this further absurdity. “I’m also a real personal-space person.”

I ask her what happened next. “She said, ‘Are you her? Or do you just look like her?’ I’m eating my pancakes, and I say something like, ‘Uh, I am her?’ ” Her giggle is almost a squeal now. “I’m thinking, Will you just get up? I will say whatever you want!” And yet, she adds, “as uncomfortable as that was—and I can never, ever imagine doing that—I almost love having that kind of experience, too. Who is the person who would come and sit in a stranger’s booth? That is very interesting to me.”

One other thing. Do you believe everything you read on the internet?

I’ve always hated this b.i.t.c.h. But, then I’ve met her many times so, I should know. Back in the day she and her sister and father used to blackmail famous rich actors with “badtouch” accusations. Which is the real reason for the “hiatus.”

It seems they are both back and they have brought the evil with them.

    honest Says:

    I don’t believe this.
Dakota is the one who say hallo to the people. And she is so nice to the people, even stranger. And she respect her fans so much. Tthat’s why she become the most popular student in her school. She is the most down to earth celebrity I’ve ever met.
I’ve read so many fake news about her. They put the it in the wrong way.

    fanning Says:

Is that all what she said? There must be other explanation. Did they just cut it? I feel like somebody try to make her looks bad and hateable…
    Because she’s too good
