Bradley Cooper Doesn't Want 'American Sniper' to Be Used in Political Conversation

Bradley Cooper keeps warm in a puffy jacket while out and about on Saturday afternoon (January 17) in New York City.

Recently, the 40-year-old American Sniper star opened up about how his movie was not meant as a political standpoint, but more as a look at the character of a soldier.

“My hope is that if someone is having a political conversation about whether we should or should not have been in Iraq, whether the war is worth fighting, whether we won, whether we didn’t, why are we still there, all those [issues], that really—I hope—is not one that they would use this movie as a tool for,” Bradley told The Daily Beast.

He continued, saying: “And for me, and for Clint, this movie was always a character study about what the plight is for a soldier.”

He’s really being super-smart about this. I agree with him. This movie shouldn’t be politicized — by either party. But of course it WILL be. Because this country can no longer have a national discourse about ANYTHING with bringing extreme politics into it.

  • Constance

You are so right. I think this is an opportunity to look at the lives of these men and not pick it apart and rip the heart and soul out of it by even mentioning politics.

  • Constance

Yeah, I heard that Fox News was mentioning the movie and opening up a panel of “discussion”. *rollseyes

  • moonbeams62

Anyone who thinks Clint Eastwood didn’t play politics with this movie is a fool. Including Bradley Cooper. Eastwood cleaned up the story and changed things to put a better spin on things, just like he did with J Edgar Hoover.

  • Constance

    Well thanks for your opinion.

  • Goose

    Is that Barry Manilow?

  • mm366

Is he kidding?! He had to know that especially those on the right would claim this and run with it! He cannot be that naïve. I knew when he bought the rights to the story and heard him nearly a year ago on NPR that it would be claimed by FOX et al and it would be no matter who made it.

  • mm366

THANK YOU!!! They must think we’re stupid as hell to believe personal politics ESPECIALLY Eastwood’s didn’t find it’s way into this. Remember, this is a guy who was willing to talk to a damn chair for his politics!

  • mm366

Yes moonbeans62, I for one appreciate it.

  • mm366

    You are so naïve.

  • Constance

    Do you know me?

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

The ONLY discussion should be the amazing life of Chris Kyle AND the incredible (from every single thing I’ve read) performance by Bradley Cooper.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

“It would be claimed by FOX”, WTF are you even talking about?

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

Well, you lost credibility when you made the asinine statement further below about FOX. And now you’re name-calling other commenters when they post an opinion that doesn’t suit you — which, ironically, this is EXACTLY what Bradley Cooper was talking about when he discouraged politicizing the movie and using it as a conversation point for politics.

  • Mercyneal

Why “rolls eyes?” Gee, last time I checked Fox had three times as many viewers as CNN and MSNBC combined. So very sick and tired of people putting down the uber successful Fox

  • Constance

Exactly. I love how Bradley put the heart into this movie. He really cared about doing right by Chris and it looks like he did just that.

  • Constance

Uber successful but uber wrong. Turning Chris Kyle into a political talking point is wrong. And it’s disrespectful.

  • Mercyneal

    Uber wrong how?

  • Constance

    Thanks, Penny.

  • Constance

They twist everything not to convey any truth but to use to their own advantage of hooking their audience into thinking “they’re always right.” And again, I don’t watch Fox News, and I am not telling anyone they can’t, but really, I’m not stupid. And I don’t need a news organization to hold my hand in life. That goes for all of them.

  • Bradley Liar

When will people learn Bradley is a lying chief manipulator. He knew Chris Kyle was a political movie. Fox and the whole right have been telling their viewers and radio listeners to go see AS made by Clint. Bradley’s exes call him arrogant and manipulator. This is why he is dating a fame seeking child he can control.Bradley is an average actor who used the right to get high ticket sales for AS. Stop lying, Bradley. I have nothing against the right or the left and just obvious Bradley who campaigned for Obama and is on the far left will do anything to make money and get an Oscar. BC is disgusting professionally and personally.

  • Missy

I don’t watch Fox often but what I do find interesting is that Fox haters give something away politically about themselves. Maybe they are MSNBC followers. Anyway a lot of support and positive commentary has been coming from diverse venues.

  • mm366

For one thing, I don’t give a shit about you thinking I’ve lost some credibility. I wasn’t looking for yours or anybody else’s thumbs up about what I think and so you can rid yourself of that notion. As for name calling, you might want to learn what that is. Me calling you a dolt would be name calling. Me using “naïve” to describe what I think of an opinion is just that, a description What I said about FOX is what I meant to say about FOX and just as I predicted, the right wing club house has politicized it and taken ownership. of the movie and story. Anything else you need let me know because I WILL provide it.

  • Constance

I’d ignore her. The drugs haven’t kicked in yet. She’s spending the day alone apparently.

  • Constance

I don’t really consider it Fox haters as opposed to News media manipulator haters. All of them cross the line at some point.

  • Missy

    Good comment. I agree

  • Constance

Thank you! I feel it is a bit unbalanced to point a finger at each news organizations and make accusations since all are guilty. And again, the point is keeping Chris Kyle’s name and legacy sacred not bandied about in a graceless political forum or desperate talking points manner.

  • Constance

It cracks me up seeing you reply to me and not actual “moonbeams62″….Sad.

  • Missy

Lying is a horrible thing to accuse someone of when you have no evidence, unless you are an insider and insightful person. However insightful persons don’t write such things. Why to you use this thread to rag on a good man. Do you work with BC? Is he a friend of yours? Or has he done you wrong? But you hooked me. I wouldn’t typically post to such a hateful comment but I needed to find out what kind of authentic insider information you base your spew on. Maybe you don’t have a job because most people with jobs go to work to earn money. I imagine an actor works for a living as well.
