Tom Petty Releases Statement on Sam Smith Songwriting Issue: 'These Things Can Happen'

Tom Petty has released a statement concerning the Sam Smith songwriting incident that took place earlier this week.

Tom and his collaborator Jeff Lynne noticed that Sam‘s song “Stay With Me” was similar to their hit “I Won’t Back Down,” and it was decided that Sam would pay them royalties.

“Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by,” Tom wrote in a statement on his website. “How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less.”

About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all.

What ????? There is NO WAY Sam’s song “Stay With Me” even remotely reminds you of that old dude’s “I Won’t Back Down” song. NO FREAK’N WAY!!!! I HATE, DESPISE old dude’s song where as I like Sam’s. Seems to me old dude is just trying to take a piggyback ride on current, hot, successful young dude to get at his $$$$. Petty is a big bully & thief!!!

  • Asiaa

I can’t believe this. These are two completely different songs.

  • tinamarie76

Tom Petty doesn’t need to piggy back ride from Sam Smith. He
has many hit songs and Sam Smith would be lucky to have a career like his. I
love Sam and I love Tom. If you know the song that is being talked about and
really listened to it you would make the connection. Last week before this came
out I was singing Stay With Me and then went into Won’t Back Down and wondered
why I was singing it. When I saw this it made complete sense to me. They sound
very similar. If they have settled it between them than there’s no need for
    hate.

Are you 12 JC? I suppose the Beatles having been ripping off Justin Bieber for years too?

  • Mark Astoforoff

I youtubed the sam smith song, couldn’t get past about 2 seconds of it, think I’ll stick to Tom Petty

  • rocknmovie

When Sam Smith has a 40 year career, you can compare him to Tom Petty, one of America’s classic rockers, along with Springsteen, Jackson Browne. “I won’t back down” was covered by Johnny Cash.

Tom Petty is such a talented and accomplished guy and I admire him even more now that I read of his decency, kindness and understanding towards an individual who actually plagiarized his work – intentionally or otherwise. No wonder he is so loved by all who’ve worked with him over the last 4 decades.
It really is too bad that someone leaked this to the media since the guys came to a private and amicable agreement that is no one else’s business.

  • Jay

Have you heard the chorus? Exactly the same tune just different words.

  • Jay

Yes the songs sound alike. The chorus almost sounds identical. Sam wouldn’t have to pay royalties if that wasn’t the case.

  • JC

No, I’m not 12. But nor am I an old white hairy a$$ dude with a delusional superiority complex like you most likely are. I’m sure all the old dudes of the world will rally in support of this old dude. One old dude to another so to speak. You old dudes always think the world owes you something. Then, you’re the 1st to start criticizing others as your 1st line of defense… because that’s all your maturity level allows for. This 30 something year old female has learned this much in life.

  • JC

… And it’s all the old white dudes defending Petty. I rest my case. I know all about you old dudes & (your grabby hands) & how defensive you get over your old people’s 70 music. Here’s a reality check OLD DUDES, most 20 year olds haven’t even heard of Petty or his song. How can they “plagiarize” something they’ve NEVER heard of before? (Yeah, you are that old!)

There is absolutely NO WAY these 2 songs sound alike… NONE. Sam just did the class act thing by conceding to the older BIG BULLY Petty – & his superiority complex.

    Grow up.

    Grow up.

JC shut up. You’re sounding like a racist pig. As if you know who Sam knows or not. Just because you didn’t know Petty doesn’t mean everyone else in their 20s doesn’t.

Wow, I’m so shocked by this. I haven’t compared the two songs side-by-side but I’m familiar with both. It almost seems like Petty is getting away with putting a patent on musical notes. We can’t own musical notes. I will say this — I never once thought of Petty’s song when I listened to Sam Smith’s song. Never once did I think “gosh, this sounds like … something I can’t put my finger on”. And I grew up in the 80′s when Petty’s music was all over the radio.

  • tinamarie76

You’re an idiot. If you don’t know or listen to his music good for you but don’t assume that others of various ages don’t listen to or know who he is. It’s called variety and both of my kids listen to Tom Petty. It has nothing to do with “old white dudes” and what statement are you reading because it’s far from bullying. For someone who is 30 you are petty and immature. Not to mention very close minded.

  • JEN

Petty is in the past. Sam has already far exceeded petty. Give him another year and he will blow everyone out of the water. Even if the songs are similar Sam’s is amazing and NOT from the tune but from Sam’s voice!!!
