Zendaya Slams Giuliana Rancic For Oscars 2015 Fashion Comments

Zendaya is not happy after hearing Giuliana Rancic‘s comments about her choice to wear dreadlocks during the 2015 Oscars.

The dreadlocks sparked the 40-year-old TV personality to say that the 18-year-old actress “smells like patchouli oil… or maybe weed” on the latest episode of E!’s Fashion Police.

“There is a fine line between what is funny and dispectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked,” Zendaya shared on Instagram.

Oh get over it, it’s freakin’ Fashion Police for Christ’s sake!

I can’t believe Giuliana would say something that reinforces stereotypes and perpetuates racial profiling among black’s with dreadlocks. Even if she didn’t know, something had to have clicked within her to say: ‘okay, let me be quiet right now.’ Don’t be deliberately problematic. Anyway, Zendaya dragged her with class and wrote eloquently.

  • devvv

It’s long overdue that someone put her in her place. Giuliana’s definitely gotten full of herself and her comment was offensive and wrong. For someone who is constantly talked about because of her weight, it seems like Giuliana should have more empathy and know how to speak about others. For the second time today, a broadcast journalist- someone who is paid to string words together- has proved their disability to do so.

  • Joolz

Giuliana is the new Joan Rivers I see. She was just plain rude and racist. She needs to shut the hell up. I don’t remember her being so rude…Zendaya is the definition of pure class and beauty.

  • Dee

Wow I expected better form Guiliana, I’m disappointed to say the least but I can rest easy knowing that Zendaya SLAYED her with class and eloquence. Very respectful yet distinctive response, THIS is a role model.

  • Joolz

Yeah I don’t remember Guiliana being so rude and racist. It’s like she’s trying to be the new Joan Rivers or something. She needs to shut the hell up. I used to like her. Lost all respect for this racist lady. I don’t like racist people. Zendaya is pure class and beauty and grace.

  • Joolz

Yeah Zendaya is a GREAT role model. I agree with this!

  • Mara

I believe Giuliana just meant she looked like a hippie. Nothing to do with race. I don’t really get why it is such a big deal…

  • tellmeyourwish

Zendaya deals with so much BS. Like first the stupid Aaliyah thing with her not being the right skin tone for that, and now with this crap about her hair. Like seriously, she is so classy in all of her responses to her haters and it saddens me that society keeps putting down a beautiful, classy actress all because she’s mixed race.

  • susan

Wow, just wow! Do you feel better, Guiliana? Proud to say that you knocked down and insulted a lovely young lady who has probably more class and talent in her little finger than you’ll ever have. Fashion Police or not, you of all people, have no right to judge anyone like that…ever.

  • sujumyeolchi

deliberately, or are you really that clueless? I doubt it’s the latter.

  • Mara

No need to be rude. I am just expressing my opinion.

  • sujumyeolchi

I came back just to edit this. my initial comment was a little rude, so I’m sorry about that. buy I do feel that one must essentially stick their hand in the sand to be unaware of the fact that black hair is political — not because black women made it so, but all the regulations and expectations and stereotypes associated with them. even if Giuliana meant a boho look like she said, this is a lesson to think about context before she speaks.

  • Isabel

I love how the only people saying “this wasn’t about RACE!!!!” are white people because GUESS WHAT Ya’ll have never FELT racism. Please, don’t tell us what is or isn’t racist when you have never felt it yourselves! How hard is that to understand?

  • Mara

No worries. I agree the statement was not a wise one, but I don’t believe for a second that Giuliana meant it to be offensive or racist. I think it was a passing comment that was perhaps a little misguided.

  • Amber

Giuliana’s comment to me reinforces the belief that there is only one standard of beauty. Braids, dreadlocks, faux locs, twists, and Afro’s are all beautiful, interesting, and expressive hairstyles and there is nothing inelegant about wearing them. Her comment reinforces negative stereotypes about African-American hairstyles and I find it to be offensive, and in poor taste. Zendaya need not be offended at all. Fashion Police is home to a bunch of C-list (at best) commenters with no real requirements to be critiquing anyone.

  • Raising Self

    That is effed up!

  • Joolz

EXACTLY!!! You are so right! White people have never felt true racism!

  • Joolz

You are so right! Zendaya does have more class, talent, and beauty than Guiliana!!

  • Joolz

Too bad. She should NEVER make comments like that. She gets offended when people say something about her like about her weight then she should not say anything offensive.

  • Ana

That’s pretty rich coming from someone who looks like a ping pong ball attached to a toothpick. Her comments are so ignorant and uncalled for. Zendaya looks beautiful and age appropriate, and her hair looks rad.

  • Shenanigans

you can be racist unintionally as well.

  • Alfred E. Newman

That Guiliana broad is friggen fugly, im sorry but who the hell is she anyway?

  • Dee

Giulianas comment was derogatory and negligent at the very least. I wouldn’t say she is a horrible person or a stone cold “racist,” but I think it is juvenile to pass off these types of comments as “a little misguided” or “comedic.” The thing about racist or homophobic or xenophobic or sexist etc comments is that most times they are not intended with malice! Usually they are thoughtless utterances; a reflection of one’s subconscious thoughts and value system. Thoughts which quite possibly are ingrained in a belief system that stems from generations of institutionalized bigotry, which is littered throughout our culture, that people try to mask with “political correctness.” I’m sure the comment was made in passing but that’s actually what worries me most.

Giuliana, Please delete your flippant Twitter apology. It’s insulting. As a general tip: Be an example for your child and reflect on your remarks and take responsibility for your racism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism and whatever else, albeit unintended. It doesn’t make you a bad person it makes you a work in progress, whereas being in denial makes you an idiot. By the way – I’m even more disappointed as a fellow Terp.

  • Jay

She associated her hairstyle with weed and patchouli oil. She automatically associated her hairstyle with the negative.
Do you see how that would be a problem if she were employing someone? It’s unconscious racism. Not a big deal, but Zendaya didn’t feel like she could let this one pass. Most people of colour wear weaves for this exact reason. They think it looks more respectable.

  • Confused

How is saying that she smells like weed an insult? That is a compliment of the highest degree!

  • Jenny from the flop

I bet it does smell though

  • So Infamous

Kylie Jenner had those SAME faux locs and yet hers were described as “edgy & cool” hmmm yea Mrs Rancic your racist ways are showing

  • Jon M’Shulla

No racism displayed. That hair is a rats’ nest!

  • Joolz

How much are the Kardashian/Jenners paying her for those positive comments? Because she pretty much worships them. They can do no wrong in her eyes,

  • xyz

    Model to whom more exactly?

  • xyz

because its political corectness going mad and every idiot is jumping its bandwagon. In the 70′s, 80′s or 90′s there was no such thing, at least not that widely spreaded. Now its poisoning our society. U cant have an opinion because retards will want to shoot u on the spot. Lets hide the shit under the mat perhaps it wont stink, know what I mean?

  • xyz

U have no idea what racism is. Go back and educate urself, dumbass

  • Maria

Good grief. Have these commenters here ever seen Fashion Police?? It is totally off the cuff, and NOT politically correct to ANYONE, black OR white. They are just as flip with comments about how a white woman may be dressed all the time. Zendaya was being ridiculously sensitive, because this comment was directed toward the boho, hippie vibe she was bringing. She needs to chill; not everyone is going to like her look, especially if drastic. It’s called freedom of speech, people.

  • princefan4life

I know Giuliana has had health issues, but she looks like an anorexic tree branch. Zendaya looked beautiful. And more importantly, she didn’t look like she stuck her finger down her throat after every meal. And speaking of weed, Giuliana might want to puff, puff and puff some more. She needs the munchies, ASAP.

Zendaya looks classier on the red carpet than on her music videos. She’s so fake.

  • JLover

If your hair smell like weed! then it smells like weed… im not a fan of Giuliana but come onnnn…u need to learn to take criticism u choose to be in the spotlight!

  • Marianne Steinmetz

First off, it is a comedy show (comedians host the show if you haven’t noticed). It is all offensive. Joan would tear Kesha (?) to bits about looking dirty. That is what people thrive on these days…abuse is comedy. Does anyone remember Don Rickles? Nothing she said is racist. Young people from every ethnic background use patchouli oil and smoke weed…get over yourselves! So tired of everyone be offended by everything. Lighten up!

  • Xander La

Not to defend Rancic at all, but when you deal with cancer you age, quickly. That’s why she looks like that.

  • Joy McBride

Who cares? Her hair looks like crap! She is a sweet girl but this look was awful.

  • Joy McBride

White people feel racism every day. The most racist people in America are black!!

  • Valerie

You who are so strongly adamant about people going to study history, I suggest you also educate yourself. And I mean that in the most positive light. Read the book Uprooting Racism, by Paul Kivel. It was written by a white man. It might help you reflect on your current understandings of racism and realize that they may have been incorrect this whole time.

  • Teni Eliza

They’re all cruel on that show. It’s ridiculous how much they reference someones appearance to something extremely offensive. I remember the other guy said Chris Hemsworth’s wife looked like she was holding onto a beer keg, when she was 7 months pregnant with twins. They find the meanest things to mock people for. I thought her hair looked beautiful. Zendaya’s response was perfect!

  • bobby miller

When you attempt to do “comedy” and fail miserably, people come for your neck. Just suck it up and act accordingly.

  • wjm457

I thought the comment was very funny. Also, why was she even there?

  • jojie

I never liked Giuliana. But after this rude and very offensive comment of hers towards a beautiful young Zendaya is just the icing on the cake. Very insensitive, irresponsible and trashy. Good job Zendaya for letting her know you ain’t just a pretty face.

  • Ash Kay

You smell like weed. That’s offensive.

  • shoes4life

I don’t know who this Zendaya is but honestly I don’t like the look of dreads however, Guliana needs to retire from Fashion anything until she address her own personal weight issues. I hope she is not sick and if she is not, then she is in denial about her eating problems. She was a natural healthy thin person years ago and now she is barely there. Something is up with her.

  • Ash Kay

It’s pathetic to expect everyone to follow your line of thinking. First off, you didn’t even try with her name, and not everyone needs to or should accept abuse.
