Nina Dobrev Confirms Exit From 'The Vampire Diaries'

Nina Dobrev is leaving Mystic Falls behind.

The 26-year-old Vampire Diaries star confirmed that she is leaving the hit CW show at the end of the current sixth season, after much speculation from fans earlier today.

“Dearest TVD Family, I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries,” Nina captioned an Instagram photo with show EP Julie Plec. “I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime.”

ARE YOU SAD that Nina Dobrev is leaving The Vampire Diaries?

I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.

There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show.’ ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.

Love, Nina

I am so proud of her. She is taking a huge step in her career and all of her fans are so excited to see what happens next. We have so much love and respect for Nina. We wish her nothing but happiness, peace, and success (but she doesn’t need us for that)!

“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs

Didnt the show revolve around her? What is going to happen now? Hope its not going to go downhill fast….I still watch it! None of the other female cast can carry on the show so they would have to hire someone fast.

As if she’s going to be a big movie star after this. Look how that turned out for misha Barton

  • Revengefan0101

Yeah… I’m confused. How can TVD have a 7th season without Elena? Did The CW not offer her enough $$$ to stay???

  • Sandy McFarlane

lmao i used to love TVD, but the show started to die when Katherine died. Elena was literally the most annoying character anyway so BYE.

  • PigPuff

I haven’t watched the most recent season yet…but will this show really succeed without her?

  • Neesh

Really though… I love Nina and think she’s a great actress and wish nothing but the best for her.. BUT I couldn’t stand Elena so I can’t really be sad she’s gone :)

i get that she probably just wants to move on from this show, and also me, myself im getting fed up with the tired storylines, but i reeeeally dont see how theyre gonna do another season without her character, everything that happens in this show revolves around her character….this makes zero sense to me. i understand nothing.

I wish all the best for Nina in the future. However, TVD next season will be a disaster without Elena. The show must be cancelled while they have some dignity left.

  • Revengefan0101

Yeah, I don’t see the point of having a 7th season without her.

  • Revengefan0101

I thought the first two seasons were the best when Kevin Williamson was still there.

  • Sara

I can’t wait to see her in more movies :D

  • Neesh

Yeah, I agree those seem to be everyone’s fave seasons.. I also kinda liked S3 (and some of 4) after that the show went to shit. S6 seems a bit better than 5 – from the clips I’ve seen but still should’ve ended it instead of dragging it out and making it worse.

Why are there too many tv series about vampires? Its getting weird and ridiculous

  • Teni Eliza

No. The storylines have been tired anyways. The past few seasons have only revolved around her and Damon’s relationship, which I can’t stand. She also gets kidnapped or almost killed a lot. I don’t know what they’ll do. They spent so much time building up her and Damon’s relationship that they can’t excuse her just leaving town. She’ll have to die and the whole next season will be Damon all depressed.

  • Teni Eliza

I liked human Elena. Vampire Elena was the turning point for me. Or at least when they were attempting a cure for her. I would have liked to see her get that but nope.

  • Teni Eliza

I honestly feel like this is a personal issue with her. She seems to love almost everyone she works with and according to IMDB, she has no projects lined up. It can’t be easy working with Ian and having to play this storyline of being in love with his character. I know I wouldn’t be able to deal.

  • Sassypants

Now I might start watching it again, I stopped a long time ago because I got sick of her character and the whole thing with her Damon and Stefan. I pretty much liked every character at the time BUT hers.

  • Amaris

Her exit from the show probably had a lot to do with Ian, especially when he got engaged too. It probably caused a lot of friction and awkwardness behind the scenes. Who can blame her. It must’ve been tough

  • Christina

I stopped watching TVD during season 4, because it became too repetitive and just boring. But now the show will probably go really badly once Elena is out of the picture. She’s the main character, so it would be better if the show just ended now.

  • Revengefan0101

For the same reason there are a lot of zombie shows. People watch them.

  • frikibabe

Because theres nothing else on Tv

  • We Are Stars

I LOVE this strip tease she did- one of my favorites

  • Revengefan0101

Wait… So you’re saying that The Walking Dead gets amazing ratings b/c there’s nothing else on TV???

  • Shenanigans

    its always fun to watch

  • Jenny from the flop

  • frikibabe

No, Im saying that there arent many tv series to choose because most of them are about vampires/zombies

  • Revengefan0101

I’m sorry but I disagree. They’re popular because people like those types of stories. The same can be said of superhero movies and TV shows.

  • frikibabe

People like what is being displayed and well made. People loved superheros in comics but not everyone loved the legends about vampires. There are so many legends out there people used to talk about and havent been played.
