Shia LaBeouf Says Celebrities Are 'Enslaved' Bodies

Shia LaBeouf recently opened up about living life as a celebrity!

“As a celebrity/star I am not an individual — I am a spectacular representation of a living human being, the opposite of an individual. The enemy of the individual, in myself as well as in others. The celebrity/star is the object of identification, with the shallow seeming life that has to compensate for the fragmented productive specializations which are actually lived,” the 28-year-old actor shared to Variety.

He added, “The requirements to being a star/celebrity are namely, you must become an enslaved body. Just flesh — a commodity, and renounce all autonomous qualities in order to identify with the general law of obedience to the course of things. The star is a byproduct of the machine age, a relic of modernist ideals. It’s outmoded.”

I get it – what he’s saying is true, but dude needs to stop whining. He’s been whining for a few years now and it’s pathetic, self-pitying garbage.

He is not only a multi-millionaire, but has opportunities for acting and self-expression on a global stage that almost every other actor would envy. He has access to good scripts, to the studio system, interesting directors, great actors consider him a colleague, and of course, all the privilege that comes with fame. Yet he acts like such a brat. The percentage of actors in the world who are as successfully as he is are like .01%. Most have to be waiters and never make it.

No one cares about your problems, Shia. Honestly, if you tuly believe what you’re saying, then stop walking red carpets, stop making big studio films, and do indie theater somewhere. Then you won’t be an ‘enslaved body’ anymore and can finally be happy.

But if you want to keep making millions and enjoying the creativity, high-exposure work, and collaboration with other great talents, suck it up the minor annoyances and shut up. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

shia you know you got options

I agree with you. There is nothing wrong with feeling a bit stuck in a persona. But at the same time he gets the luck that not a lot of people have. Some lives are much harder than that. besides, his statement seems a little robotic, as if other people helped him write it. It’s so formal that it lacks any real depth or appreciation for the position he is in.

    What a nuthead

Shia, quit the business & get a job in the real world where you won’t be “enslaved” and so miserable.

I’m sure all your troubles will disappear if you earn $50,000 a year & you don’t have to worry about being a celebrity.

well it sound like he needs another trip to rehab

  • smokeskater

He is totally right, but at the same time, he can quit or take on roles that do not cater to his “enslaved body.” Eventually, people will forget him.

  • 55vineyard

I have absolutely no idea what he is talking about, but agree with others that he needs to stop whining or get out of acting.

what the hell is wrong with her eyebrows?!!? where are they!?!? can’t she draw a line at least?? her face is very odd

  • FlakesofSunlite

    Then why doesn’t he leave.

  • FlakesofSunlite

Why does Shia have to say “he’s a celebrity/star”—why does he have to remind us?

  • mandyz

His response sounds existential yet correct, that doesn’t sound like it came from his PR, I don’t think he’s actually a stupid guy. All these people want the huge bucks attached to it, that’s why they won’t leave. As much as they are products and told what to do on the daily and have no privacy at all (aka sell their souls), they could leave the industry but the money is the biggest temptation. But they do have options at the end of the day. Dave Chappelle left and he’s still doing great doing standup tours, he may not have the 50 million dollar money that Comedy Central threw at his face but he realized it was worth cutting off from the industry when he already made a good amount of net worth and then did his own thing and he has a net worth of 10 million which I’m sure any regular person would be satisfied with. I’m sure the Disney machine and the Michael Bay/Spielberg machine did mess up Shia to an extent but he could leave happily with the 25 million dollar net worth he has.

I completely understand Chapelle’s decision and I believe that he made the right choice. He has a great career anyway and yes, I wouldn’t mind both his and chapelle’s net worth and career either. :)
