'Titanic' Director Reveals Why Rose Didn't Make Room for Jack on the Door

Director James Cameron has finally answered the question many Titanic fans have been asking since the movie was released twenty years ago…why didn’t Rose (Kate Winslet) share the door with Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) while waiting for help in the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean?!

“The answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies. Very simple. . . . Obviously it was an artistic choice, the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him . . . I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so endearing to the audience that it hurts them to see him die. Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless. . . . The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons,” James told Vanity Fair.

James continued, “I was in the water with the piece of wood putting people on it for about two days getting it exactly buoyant enough so that it would support one person with full free-board, meaning that she wasn’t immersed at all in the 28 degree water so that she could survive the three hours it took until the rescue ship got there. [Jack] didn’t know that she was gonna get picked up by a lifeboat an hour later; he was dead anyway. And we very, very finely tuned it to be exactly what you see in the movie because I believed at the time, and still do, that that’s what it would have taken for one person to survive.”

Of course, Jack dies after freezing in the Atlantic Ocean while Rose survives.

If you didn’t know, Titanic will be returning to theaters for a limited engagement!

I’m glad Cameron finally put this out there. I mean you get sick of hearing about it 20 years later. It’s a movie folks!

Man, what an arrogant asshole. Just be happy people still talk about (and to) you after “Avatar”. What he fails to get because he has such a bubble head, is that people are not angry that jack died. they are just angry the door was big enough for the two of them. even proven by high school science. so what he should really complain about is that the props department couldnt find a smaller door and that he, the director, didn’t notice it while filming. Plain and simple.

WHO GIVES A SHIT OCD FREAK

  • Max

well apparently nobody gives a shit about you and your comments either. yet you’re still here. so what’s your point?
stop telling people what to care about. it’s their priorities, their opinions and their lives. go fix your own.

  • Neon

How would you know who gives a shit about my comments. You’re completely off your rails going off about a door size.

  • Neon

It was good for Jack to die, otherwise he’s a complete a**. NOW EVERYONE CAN SHUT UP ABOUT IT.

Everyone is allowed their opinion…Geez…Why do some people believe they are entitled to one and no body else is? For myself…The movie was beautiful…But I wouldn’t have survived I guess…Because I would have done my best to not allow him to die in that freezing water…But then that’s just me and my opinion…

I would have pushed his ass off.

It wasnt even a door. It was a peice of paneling from GRAND STAIR CASE.

I didn’t care for the two main characters of the movie, I just loved watching that ship sink.

So are people angry only because there was a technicality of unrealistic proportions was missed? I do not believe that people would be so intensely and passionately angry at the size of the prop (which yes could have fit two people). People are angry because first, it’s Leonardo DiCaprio that was playing the role of Jack (adding the aesthetics aspect of the character and the heartthrob that he was and still is), but also, because the character of Jack was one that clearly resonates with a lot of people; someone who was humble, carefree and had such a positive outlook on life. People are angry because they would have preferred if he had lived happily ever after with Rose. But just as James Cameron eloquently stated, Jack must die! There was no way out of this. If people are angry because it was a simple ‘prop malfunction’ then they really need to resurrect that titanic and sail away to a place called “Get over it”! But there are other factors that contribute to this huge, popular culture issue! And I believe that adding to the fact that it’s Leonardo DiCaprio playing such a down to earth and lovable character- adds to the argument that people are angry because they wished he had lived. Which is coupled by the fact that the door size was big enough for two people. Alas, it does not change the fact that Jack will always die, in every version of the film that alters his death (i.e. a smoke stack fell on him- James Cameron).

Can’t help but simply love that movie. Just hit my nerves every time I saw it. And I think Cameron is right in one point: The movie wouldn’t have the same effect with an happy end for Jack (and Rose).
