Who Wins in 'Godzilla vs. Kong'? Ending Explained! (Spoilers)

The new movie Godzilla vs. Kong is out now in theaters, as well as on HBO Max, and we’ve gotta talk about that action-packed ending!

This post is going to contain spoilers from the movie, so stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happens…

The film opens with Kong on Skull Island, where he is confined to a containment center to shield his whereabouts from Godzilla. It’s believed that if Godzilla knows where to find Kong, that he’ll hunt him down. Unfortunately, Kong is unhappy in containment and clearly wants to get out.

We learn that Apex Cybernetics, a company that was just attacked by Godzilla, is developing a Mechagodzilla in hopes of eliminating the Titans. There are limitations due to the power source and they hatch a plan to travel to the Hollow Earth to harness the power of an energy source there. Kong is recruited to guide the team to the Hollow Earth, but an attack from Godzilla on their way to the entry point almost derails their plans.

After reaching the Hollow Earth, the power source is discovered and Kong figures out that it can recharge an axe made from the spine of a Godzilla species, which becomes his new weapon. The power source’s signature is sent back to the Apex team, who use it to activate Mechagodzilla. At the same time, Godzilla senses the energy and uses his atomic breath to create a hole from earth’s surface all the way to Hollow Earth.

When Kong returns to Earth’s surface, he battles Godzilla and wins the round with the help of the axe, which can fight off the atomic breath. He injures Godzilla, but doesn’t finish him off. Godzilla returns for another round of battle and defeats Kong.

At this point, Mechagodzilla goes rogue and is possessed by the consciousness of Ghidorah, aka Monster Zero. Godzilla goes after Mechagodzilla and a revived Kong joins him in the fight. After Mechagodzilla’s controls are short-circuited back at the Apex base, the two Titans are able to team up to defeat him.

Godzilla shoots his atomic breath at Kong’s axe to recharge it and Kong uses it to decapitate Mechagodzilla. After saving the day, Godzilla and Kong make peace with each other and go their separate ways, Godzilla into the ocean and Kong back to Hollow Earth.

So, in the end, they both win!
