An Original 'The Resident' Star Leaves The Series After Four Seasons

Shaunette Renee Wilson has said goodbye to The Resident.

The 31-year-old actress starred as Dr. Mina Okafor in the Fox show, and her exit came after her character chose to go back to Nigeria instead of being deported by the hands of Dr. Cain, who found out she had planned to testify against him.

“After deeply thoughtful reflection, I approached the producers some time ago asking to leave the show and they agreed — and gave my character a wonderful sendoff,” Shaunette shared about her exit in a statement.

She added, “I am appreciative of them for allowing me to embody as beautiful of a soul as Dr. Mina Okafor. I would also like to thank the studio, network, cast, crew and, most of all, the wonderfully dedicated fans of The Resident for their support over the last four seasons.”

While Shaunette has left the show for now, there is room for her return someday.

EP Andrew Chapman shared with EW that she is welcome to return in any capacity in the future.

“We’re all completely heartbroken,” he shared. “We did not want her to leave. She was so foundational to the DNA of the show. She was always so badass and a truth-teller. We are devastated to lose her, but we have told her the door is always open for her here. There’s no ill will at all.”

Last year, The Resident was one of the medical dramas to give back during the pandemic.
