SNL's Lorne Michaels Breaks Silence on Kanye West's Backstage Outburst

Who could forget hearing Kanye West‘s infamous leaked backstage rant right before his Saturday Night Live performance last month where he found out his set had been dismantled.

“Look at that s–t. They took my f–kin’ stage off SNL without asking me and now I’m bummed,” the 38-year-old entertainer could be heard saying. “Now I ain’t gonna do this. We’re breaking the motherf–king Internet.”

Now, SNL‘s longtime producer Lorne Michaels is responding to the rant, saying, “That happened in his dressing room. Kanye‘s been on the show a lot of years, and it’s always different. He’s an artist, you know? A great artist.”

Lorne added to E! News, “When he did the 40th anniversary show—which I wanted him to be part of it—I had no idea what he was going to do, even 10 minutes before we went on the air. He arrived that day. But he just always delivers, and he’s Kanye.”

Michael Che Replaces Cecily Strong on SNL's Weekend Update

Cecily Strong is being replaced as an anchor on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update segment by comedian Michael Che.

The show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels confirmed the news to The New York Times, saying the switch came after trying “a number of different combinations” over the last few weeks.

Michael worked on SNL as a writer last season and he is best known for his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Cecily will still remain on the series as a featured player.

Michael is a strong writer and he’s really funny,” Lorne said. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make ‘Update’ different from what’s gone before.”

“It struggled to find an identity last season… because what had come before had been pretty brilliant,” Lorne added. “This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now. That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”

This will be the first time in SNL history that two men sit at the anchor desk.
