Spike Lee Reveals What He'll Be Watching Instead of the Oscars, Insists It's Not a Boycott (Video)

Spike Lee appeared on Good Morning America on Wednesday (January 20) to discuss his decision to not attend the 2016 Oscars due to the lack of diverse nominees.

“Here’s the thing. I have never used the word boycott,” the 58-year-old director said, “All I said was my beautiful wife Tonya, we’re not coming. That’s it, and I gave the reasons. I never used the word boycott.”

When asked what he would be doing instead of watching the Oscars live, he replied, “February 28th, we’ll be at the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. I’m going to a Knicks game.”

“It’s like do you,” Spike continued. “I’m not going. My wife’s not going. Everyone else can do what they want to do.”

“It goes further than the Academy Awards. It has to go back to the gatekeepers. The people who have the green-light vote,” Spike said. “We’re not in the room [with] he executives when they have these green-light meetings quarterly where they look at the scripts. They look who’s in it and they decide what we’re making and what we’re not making.”

Director Spike Lee Won't Attend Oscars 2016 Due to Lack of Diversity in Nominations

Spike Lee has just announced that he will not attend the 2016 Oscars due to the lack of diversity in the nominees.

The 58-year-old director, who was set to receive an honorary Oscar at the ceremony, made the announcement on his Instagram page on Martin Luther King day.

“For too many years, when the Oscar nominations are revealed, my office phone rings off the hook with the media asking me my opinion about the lack of African-Americans and this year was no different. For once (maybe), I would like the media to ask all the white nominees and studio heads how they feel about another all-white ballot. If someone has addressed this and I missed it then I stand mistaken,” Spike wrote. “As the great actor Leslie Odom Jr. sings and dances in the game changing Broadway musical HAMILTON, ‘I WANNA BE IN THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENS’. People, the truth is we ain’t in those rooms, and until minorities are, the Oscar nominees will remain lilly white.”

The Academy released a short statement about the lack of diversity after the nominations were revealed. Jada Pinkett-Smith has debated boycotting the show as well for the same reason.

Spike Lee Returns with 'Chi-Raq' - Watch the Trailer

Spike Lee takes on a classic Greek play for his new film Chi-Raq, set to be released on Amazon on Dec 4th.

Based on Aristophanes’ Greek play, Lysistrata, the new film follows gang violence by a few men in a neighborhood in Chicago.

Similar to the play’s plot-line, a powerful female member of the community, Lysistrata, bands all the women together to withhold sex from their partners to put an end to the fighting and bloodshed. Predictably this leads to the inevitable decision of the men to choose weapons or their women.

The film boasts a star studded cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Cannon, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, Dave Chappelle, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, and Teyonah Parris playing Lysistrata.

This is also Amazon Studios first featured film.
