'The Other Two' Creator Chris Kelly Pitches a Broadway Play About Coronavirus Outbreak
Chris Kelly, the creator of Comedy Central’s The Other Two and a former SNL writer, has a great idea for a Broadway play that he thinks will win a Tony Award in six years.
The 36-year-old writer and director says the play will be “about this time,” which means it will be set in the coronavirus outbreak.
“in 6yrs a play about this time will win the tony,” Chris tweeted on Thursday night (March 19). “it’ll be 4hrs long and take place in real time, in one apartment, over the course of a single night. it’ll follow a big family (w/ les daughter) and 40% will be performed back-to-audience so it really feels like they’re in an apt.”
While you’re at home during this time, make sure to watch Chris‘ semi-autobiographical movie Other People on Netflix. It’s a must-see!

The set's three stories. So many stairs. And scenes sometimes happen on each floor at the same time. Or like, one scene could be happening on the 2nd floor, while another actor just quietly folds laundry on the 3rd. Then after a bit, she pulls focus and does a scene, and so on.

The family is upper middle class. But one son is dating a girl from a working class family and she represents Every Other Person in America. Theres also an Aunt who's a Nurse. Shes only in Act 1 b/c she has to get to her shift, but she returns at the end for the Very Last Line.

The gay son will be played by a straight actor. The straight dad will be played by a gay actor.

And every female character — except for the Nurse (who's played by Laurie Metcalfe til the day after the Tonys) will be played by someone from "The Good Fight."
And the whole play you'll keep turning to the person you're with to say "I think she's also on 'The Good Fight.'"

At first I thought it would be called "-19"
But now I don't think so. Hm. Need to think more.
Other ideas that are close but no:
"Imagine All The People" — better for an indie
"America." — with the period (is this already a play?)— Chris Kelly (@imchriskelly) March 20, 2020
