'Tiger King': Here's a 2020 Update on Joe Exotic & Carole Baskin

Tiger King is a brand new documentary series on Netflix and people are becoming obsessed with the show!

The series follows Joe Exotic, a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer who presides over an Oklahoma roadside zoo. Things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a big cat sanctuary, threatens to put them out of business, stoking a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe’s arrest for a murder-for-hire plot, and reveals a twisted tale where the only thing more dangerous than a big cat is its owner.

So, where are Joe and Carole today?

Joe, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, was sentenced to 22 years in person after he was found guilty of trying to pay a hitman to kill Carole. He was also charged for killing five tigers in 2017 and for trying to claim that he donated five baby lemurs when he actually sold them.

Despite being in prison, Joe still maintains his innocence and recently wrote a Facebook post in which he says that the Netflix series will show that he is innocent. He said, “At 12:01am Friday Morning 132 countries that get Netflix most will be trapped in their own homes with nothing to do but watch the TV series Tiger King, and the entire world will know what these people did to put me here.”

Carole is still running her Big Cat Rescue sanctuary, where people can pay $50 for a guided tour of the property.

“It’s not like a zoo, you can’t just walk around,” she told Vanity Fair in March 2020. “We take you out for a guided tour for an hour and a half. We tell people why these cats don’t belong in cages and why there shouldn’t have to be an organization like Big Cat Rescue to rescue cats from horrible situations. At the end [of the tour], we actually get them to call their member of Congress and ask them to cosponsor the Big Cat Public Safety Act.”
