Jamie Lee Curtis Recalls Emotional Moment Daughter Ruby Came Out as Transgender

Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter Ruby are opening up.

Back in July, the 62-year-old Halloween Kills actress revealed that her youngest child was transgender.

At the time, she said she and husband Christopher Guest “have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby.”

In a joint interview, Jamie and Ruby, 25, recalled the moment Ruby decided to tell her mom that she was transgender.

While talking to People, Ruby recalled the “scary” moment she decided to come out to her parents.

“Just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn’t know,” Ruby explained. “It was intimidating—but I wasn’t worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life.”

Being too nervous to tell them in person, Ruby decided to text her parents instead.

“I called her immediately,” Jamie recalled after receiving the text. “Needless to say there were some tears involved.”

Since then, Jamie, Christopher, and the rest of the family have slowly adjusted to calling their child Ruby, and using the she/her/hers pronouns, but not without “mistakes.”

Jamie also said that not using Ruby‘s birth has been the “hardest” part of the transition.

“The name that you’d given a child. That you’ve been saying their whole life,” Jamie said. “And so, of course, at first that was the challenge. Then the pronoun. My husband and I still slip occasionally.”

Ruby then added that she doesn’t “get mad at them for that.”

As for why they decided to discuss their story publicly, Jamie said she’s not “trying to force-feed something to people,” explaining, “I’m simply saying, ‘This is our family’s experience.’”

Ruby said that she hopes that speaking out will help inspire others, adding, “I’m happy to be more visible if it helps others.”
