Queen Elizabeth Won't Receive Trooping the Colour Salute for the First Time in 70 Years

There are going to be some big changes to Queen Elizabeth‘s Trooping the Colour event this year.

The Mirror reports that for the first time in her 70-year reign, the 96-year-old royal will not receive the salute this year.

The outlet adds that Prince Charles, Prince William, and Princess Anne will likely receive it instead of her.

While she won’t receive the salute during the military display at the Horse Guards Parade, she will hopefully still be in attendance for part of the June 2 ceremony, which is reportedly “being modified with her comfort in mind on a momentous year for her reign.”

The Palace has said that Queen Elizabeth has been dealing with “episodic mobility problems,” which is why she has cancelled appearances at certain events. Earlier this month it was announced that she would be missing the State Opening of Parliament due to these mobility issues.

It’s possible that the Queen would arrive to inspect the troops, which she does for every Trooping the Colour, before leaving the ceremony and allowing Charles, William and Anne to represent her at the parade. Another possible arrangement would find the Queen appearing only on the balcony at the end of the ceremony. The Mirror writes that “either way… she will not be present for most of the parade.”

Before this year’s event, the outlet notes that she had “always been present at Horse Guards Parade for the duration of the ceremony, either on horseback or, in more recent years, seated on a dais.”
