Shia LaBeouf Admits He Contemplated Suicide During Career & Legal Trouble

Shia LaBeouf is opening up about his career low point and how he contemplated suicide during that dark time.

The 36-year-old actor faced some legal trouble in recent years after being involved in car crashes, an emotional outburst at a Broadway show, and a lawsuit for sexual battery and assault that was filed by his ex FKA twigs.

Shia was also fired from the movie Don’t Worry Darling by director Olivia Wilde.

“At this point I’m nuclear,” Shia said in his interview with Word on Fire Catholic MinistriesBishop Robert Barron. “Nobody wants to talk to me, including my mother. My manager’s not calling. The agent’s not calling. I’m not connected to the business any more.”

Shia admitted that he contemplated committing suicide at the time.

“I had a gun on the table. I was outta here,” Shia said. “I didn’t want to be alive anymore when all this happened. Shame like I had never experienced before — the kind of shame that you forget how to breathe. You don’t know where to go. You can’t go outside and get like a, a taco.”

“But I was also in this deep desire to hold on,” he added. Shia then talked about engaging with Catholicism while preparing for his role in the movie Padre Pio.

“I know now that God was using my ego to draw me to Him. Drawing me away from worldly desires. It was all happening simultaneously. But there would have been no impetus for me to get in my car, drive up [to the monastery] if I didn’t think, ‘Oh, I’m gonna save my career,’” he said.

Shia also talked about method acting.

“I don’t identify with that school of thought, really. I feel a whole lot, I’ve got a big heart. I don’t know if I’m a method guy — and I think some of that stuff is ridiculous,” he said. “I feel a whole lot, I’ve got a big heart. I don’t know if I’m a method guy — and I think some of that stuff is ridiculous. I like to be immersive. I like all immersive experiences, not just acting. That’s probably why I like Catholicism as well. I like adventure, and that requires full immersion.”

Shia added, “I would consider myself an immersive actor, but method acting has like a bad smell to it. Kind of douchey, kind of, just like, mean.”
