Nicki Minaj's 'Super Freaky Girl' Kicked Out of Rap Grammys Category - Find Out Why

According to THR, the Academy’s rap committee determined that Nicki Minaj‘s pop-sounding song, which samples Rick James’ 1981 classic “Super Freak,” should compete for Best Pop Solo Performance instead of any rap awards.

This is far from the first time a rap song has been placed in a pop category: Doja Cat’s “Say So,” which includes her singing and rapping, and Post Malone’s “Better Now,” which has hip-hop and pop elements, also competed in the Best Pop Solo Performance category.

Nicki has 10 Grammy nominations, but only competed in pop once for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with “Bang Bang” alongside Ariana Grande and Jessie J.

Nominees for the 2023 Grammys will be announced on November 15, and the live telecast will air on February 5, 2023, on CBS.
