The 2004 Mark Romanek-directed music video for one of Jay‘s classics is also surrounded in controversy.

While it won at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Cinematography, it was also criticized for depictions of dog-fighting. And in the most controversial scene, Jay-Z is shot with multiple bullets.

Before any airing on MTV, John Norris appeared in an intro to explain why the network felt it was right to air the video, and why Jay felt the scene was important as the “rebirth” of Shawn Carter. BET also included a special intro.
