Alec Baldwin's 'Firearm Enhancement' Carrying 5-Year Prison Sentence Dropped from 'Rust' Shooting Charges

Alec Baldwin was dealt a major victory in the upcoming legal battle over the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie Rust.

The 64-year-old star was charged with involuntary manslaughter in late January. If convicted, he could face 18 months in prison on that alone.

However, the charge was accompanied by a “firearm enhancement” carrying an additional five years in prison. Alec formally requested that the enhancement, which was not legally enacted until after the accidental shooting, be dropped from his charges.

On Monday (February 20), the enhancement was dropped.

According to ABC News, the Santa Fe District Attorney’s office confirmed that it would be dropping the enhancement. Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will also have the charge dropped.

“In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the Rust film set,” Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said in a statement shared with the outlet. “The prosecution’s priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys.”

Alec is at the center of another lawsuit stemming from the tragedy.
