Miley Cyrus Reveals What Really Happened Behind-the-Scenes in Infamous Topless Annie Leibovitz 'Vanity Fair' 2008 Cover Photo

Everybody knows the controversy surrounding the 2008 Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair cover shoot done by Annie Leibovitz, but not everyone knows how it really went down behind-the-scenes.

The 30-year-old pop superstar addressed the scandal as part of her Endless Summer Vacation (backyard sessions) special, released in celebration of her new single “Used to Be Young,” as she looks back at the moments that defined her career.

“We gotta go there. 2008,” she remarked as she looked at the controversial photo of her 15-year-old self.

“Everybody knows the controversy of the photo, but they don’t really know the behind-the-scenes, which is always much more meaningful,” she continued.

“My little sister Noah was sitting on Annie‘s lap and actually pushing the button of the camera, taking the pictures. My family was on set. And this was the first time I ever wore red lipstick because Pati Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana. This image of me is the complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being, and that’s what was so upsetting.”

“But really brilliant choices looking back from those people,” she went on.
