Radio DJ Storms Off-Air After Being Told He Can't Joke About Demi Lovato Being Non-Binary

Demi Lovato‘s recent announcement is causing some controversy.

The 28-year-old “Sorry Not Sorry” superstar revealed on Wednesday (May 19) that they are non-binary and use “they/them” pronouns, which led to one radio DJ storming off of his show live.

Kiss 108′s Matt Siegel (of Matty in the Morning) made a long speech on the air about apparently being told by his boss that he can’t joke about Demi‘s non-binary admission, and the audio of the 71-year-old radio DJ’s rant is now going viral.

“I was just told, and it’s nothing personal because I like my boss, but he just called and said I have to stop talking about what I’ve been talking about this morning. I loved the radio show this morning. I’m totally dead serious. I felt like I was back. We’re laughing and we’re having fun…this is why I got rich. Okay. Because I told it like it is to my listeners for 40 bleeping years. They pulled the plug on me and said you can’t talk about what you’re talking about,” he’s heard saying.

“Today I was anti-wokeness and I can’t do that, so basically, what I’m told is, I can talk about light, funny things…but I can’t do what I really want to do, which is just be a funny comic and tell it like it is…so I’m ending my portion of the radio show right now…it has been a hell of a run, but I think it’s coming to an end.”

“I am the biggest of all time, and they said, ‘Shut up, Matt! Stop talking.’ Well, I hope you’re happy, because I just stopped talking. Matty out,” he signed off.

Later on, he spoke to Boston.com about his abrupt leave: “I’m against her binary thing; I think she’s a troubled woman and a lot of young people are taking her seriously and it bothers me. But of course, it’s a comedy show, so I did it in the context of jokes. We were having fun with it, and my boss called up and said that I’d crossed the line and they didn’t want me talking about it anymore…I responded by saying, ‘If I can’t talk about what I’m thinking at this point in my career, I don’t want to be on the radio anymore.’”

Despite seemingly quitting, he said he believes he will remain at the radio station.

“There’s no ill feeling between me and my boss or me and my company, none. They’re doing their jobs. I get it. They got a lot of heat this morning, people complaining about things I said on the air. He doesn’t want me to be fired. His heart was in the right place.”

He also reflected on controversy in the past.

“I did a whole thing talking about Trump, and then I got heat on that — ‘Half our listeners are Republicans, what are you doing, you’re gonna lose all our male listeners’ — so I stopped. So I stopped talking about Trump, and today I’m ‘anti-woke.’ You know the expression, ‘The guy standing in the middle of the road gets hit by cars going both ways?’ That’s what happened to me.”

Matt Siegel also went on to discuss tension amid the pandemic.

“Do you think I’m the only one that’s had it with the negativity in the world we live in during this pandemic? Do you think I’m the only person that’s snapped? I doubt it…you know what’s gonna happen? Around 3 or 4 this afternoon, I’ll go, ‘Wait a minute, am I really walking away from millions of dollars? I don’t really care that much.’ Cooler heads will prevail, I’m sure. They made it very clear that they don’t want me to leave.”
