GLAAD Media Awards 2020 - Winners Announced in Virtual Ceremony!

The 2020 GLAAD Media Awards didn’t happen in person this year, but they did hold a virtual ceremony to announce all of the winners!

The event was live streamed on GLAAD’s Facebook and YouTube accounts and an edited version of the virtual event will be shown on Logo on August 3.

“During this era of political and cultural division, LGBTQ images in media are crucial in accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community and countering the dangerous rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis (via The Hollywood Reporter). “This year’s award recipients, including Pose and Schitt’s Creek, continue to bring necessary mainstream visibility to diverse voices within the LGBTQ community, ultimately raising the bar for LGBTQ inclusion and representation in media.”

A lot of big stars made appearances in the virtual event, including Jennifer Garner, Cara Delevingne, Booksmart‘s Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, Demi Lovato, Dan Levy, Ben Platt, Chloe x Halle, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, and many more.

GLAAD Media Awards 2020 in New York City Cancelled Due to Coronavirus Concerns

The 2020 GLAAD Media Awards have been cancelled.

The ceremony was set to take place on Thursday, March 19 in New York City, but the organization has announced the awards event has been cancelled due to growing concerns about the coronavirus.

“Given GLAAD’s long-standing commitment to the safety of our members, sponsors, and guests, the GLAAD Media Awards will no longer take place on March 19th in New York City,” Rich Ferraro, chief communications officer and an executive producer of the GLAAD Media Awards, said in a statement. “The team at GLAAD has been in communication with the City of New York and is following the latest recommendations from Governor Cuomo. We were planning to unveil a historic get-out-the-vote campaign at the event because everything is at stake for LGBTQ Americans this election year, and are hopeful that the program and GLAAD’s ongoing work to fight against anti-LGBTQ discrimination will continue to be supported and funded. Since the event is canceled, our advocacy work will experience a loss of funding and we encourage community members and allies to consider becoming a GLAAD member to ensure this work continues.”

Lilly Singh was supposed to host the event. Ryan Murphy was going to be presented with the Vito Russo Award this year while Judith Light was going to be honored with the excellence in media prize.

Earlier today, another big awards show was also delayed due to the coronavirus.
