Why Isn't Will Smith in 'Independence Day: Resurgence'?

Will Smith was the star of the smash hit movie Independence Day back in 1996 and it cemented his status as a box office star, so why isn’t he in the sequel?

The 47-year-old actor says that he decided not to star in Independence Day: Resurgence as it didn’t fit into his schedule.

“It was one of those things, I had a couple of films lined up. I had Concussion and Suicide Squad and so it was a decision, you know, timing wise, between Independence Day and Suicide Squad,” Will told BBC Radio 1 Xtra.

The movie’s director Roland Emmerich initially said that Will was too expensive for the project, but then said the actor opted out of being in the film.

“In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out,” Roland told Cinema Blend.

Later, Roland went into more detail on the process of writing the screenplay and the characters that would be included.

“The first script included Will Smith, it was a totally different story. There was no new generation or anything, it was a father/son story, and when that didn’t work I said ‘let’s explore other possibilities,’” he told HeyUGuys. “Maybe two years ago it fully hit me because I hired two young writers and they kind of said this has to be a hand-off to a younger generation and that’s what I thought was the real trick to make this work.”

While Will did not film anything new for the movie, he is seen in the sequel through photographs!
