John Mulaney is opening up about the reasons he said no to taking over hosting duties on The Daily Show.
The 40-year-old comedian was a guest on the Basic! podcast, where he shared how he was approached for the gig before Trevor Noah was hired for the spot, and why he passed on it.

John Mulaney is opening up about his intervention.
Back in late 2020, it was revealed that the 40-year-old comedian checked into rehab for alcohol and cocaine addiction. In February 2021, John completed treatment has been living sober ever since.
In his new Netflix comedy special John Mulaney: Baby J, John admitted that he was heavily using cocaine before a group of 12 friends in the comedy community gathered together in-person in New York City and on Zoom under the guise of “dinner with a friend from college” to stage an intervention.
Many of those friends included some very famous comedians.
“Let me just call this out now, I don’t mean to be weird. It was a star-studded intervention. It was, like, a good group,” John said in the Netflix special. “It was a good group. As mad as I was when I walked in there, I was like, this is a good lineup, this is really flattering in its own way.”
“It was like a ‘We Are the World’ of alternative comedians over the age of 40. All comedians. Yet no one said a funny thing the entire night,” John jokingly added.
“I was going psychotic. I am sitting there in an awful chair, crashing from cocaine,” John recalled. “No one will let me go to the bathroom to freshen up and the funniest people are staring at me, refusing to do jokes. It was maddening.”
He continued, “I was so mad that night. They had tricked me. I mean, at its core, an intervention is a prank. They had pranked me. They were trying to tell me what to do with my life, they were trying to control me. They were sending me away to rehab for months. I felt powerless. I felt very angry.”
Now looking back, John feels grateful for all of the friends that helped him get sober.
“Getting to do this show, and standing here, listen, I am grateful to everyone at my intervention,” John said. They intervened. They confronted me and they totally saved my life.”

Olivia Munn and John Mulaney made a pit stop to pick up a snack after touching down in LaGuardia Airport on Thursday (December 8) in New York City.
The couple were spotted walking through the airport with food from Wendy’s in hand. Olivia snacked on some fries as the paparazzi snapped photos. Both stars held drinks.

Olivia Munn is showing support for boyfriend John Mulaney!
The 41-year-old actress was seen joining John, 39, while heading to his show at Madison Square Garden on Thursday afternoon (June 23) in New York City.
John is currently touring around North America and he has three shows at the iconic New York venue this week. Following tonight’s show, he will also perform there on Friday and Saturday.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier this week, John talked about his first Father’s Day after welcoming son Malcolm in December 2021.
“He got me a plethora of gifts,” John said. “I woke up, and I had breakfast with him. And his new thing is when I turn the phone on and it’s in selfie mode and I put it on video, he grabs it and slowly brings the camera into his mouth. So, all his films have the same twist ending.”
FYI: Olivia is wearing an Adornmonde necklace.
