A new Naked Gun reboot is moving forward, with Liam Neeson in negotiations to star and Akiva Schaffer set to direct.

The original Naked Gun series featured the mishaps of officer Frank Drebin, made famous by Leslie Nielsen. Liam would reportedly be playing the son of Detective Frank Drebin instead of stepping into the original role played by Leslie Nielsen, according to Deadline.

Leslie Nielsen passed away in 2010 after being admitted to a hospital with pneumonia. Over three films, he turned the lovable character into one of Hollywood’s classic slapstick comedy franchises. The first film was based on the 1982 ABC series Police Squad!

Liam Neeson‘s most recent film, Marlowe, will be released on December 2, 2022. He co-stars in the film with Diane Kruger and plays a private eye set in 1930s Los Angeles.

Comedian Leslie Nielsen has died of complications from pneumonia in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84.

“We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60 year career in motion pictures and television,” his family said in a statement.

Leslie, a veteran actor also known for his role in the Airplane film franchise, reportedly died at 5:34 p.m. EST on Sunday (November 28).
