Anderson Cooper Talks His 'Unconventional' Approach to Raising Son Wyatt with Ex Benjamin Maisani

Anderson Cooper is opening up about fatherhood!

Since welcoming son Wyatt in late April, the 53-year-old CNN anchor has been enjoying time with the newborn, who he is raising with best friend and ex-boyfriend Benjamin Maisani.

“There is no acrimony between us,” Anderson shared with People. “Even though it’s maybe unconventional because he’s my ex, he is my family.”

Despite no longer being together, Anderson went on to explain why he and Benjamin decided to co-parent Wyatt.

“I knew what it was like growing up without a dad,” Anderson shared, whose father Wyatt Emory Cooper died during heart surgery when he was 10. “If there was ever something that happened to me, I would want Wyatt to be surrounded by love.”

Anderson and Benjamin split back in March 2018 after almost 10 years together.

“While we were a couple, he wasn’t sure he wanted kids, which was one of the issues we’d always had,” Anderson admitted. “But when I decided, ‘I’m just going to do this,’ he started to be interested.”

“I don’t really have a family, and so my friends become my family. And this is somebody that I was involved with for 10 years, he’s a great guy,” he explained.

“We didn’t work out as a couple…but when I was a little kid, it was just my mom and my brother. But it was my mom and she was not the most parental person and I wish some adult, after my dad died, had stepped in,” he went on to say.

“So I thought, if something happens to me or even if something doesn’t happen to me, the more people love my son and are in his life, I’m all for that. My ex is a great guy and it’s good to have two parents, if you can.”

He also revealed he plans to have Wyatt call him “dad” or “daddy” and Benjamin “papa.” Plus, Benjamin, who is from France, will speak to him in French too!

Anderson Cooper Describes First Weekend as a Dad with Newborn Son Wyatt!

Anderson Cooper is opening up about his first weekend as a dad to his newborn son, Wyatt Morgan Cooper, who was born on April 27.

“It was great. It was awesome,” Anderson told Chris Cuomo on CNN on Monday night (May 4). “I spent the whole weekend just looking at him and burping him and feeding him. It was great.”

He added that when his son was laying on his chest it was “like this amphibious tree frog lying on my chest.”

“You’ve got a new baby, it’s a new you and I love watching you laugh and smile,” Chris shared. “There will be nothing else like it in your life.”

“I just stare at him. Hours will go by and I realize I’ve just been sitting there, holding him,” Anderson said earlier in the day on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “After a baby’s born, you do this thing called skin to skin where you hold the baby on your chest. I still do that all the time. There’s nothing better.”

He added, “I just can’t help but stare at him. And every now and then, you know, baby’s sleep a lot. But then he’ll suddenly open up his eyes and look at you. I don’t even know if he can see me at this stage, but it seems like it and he’s sort of understanding sounds.”

Anderson Cooper Has Hired Same Nanny as BFF Andy Cohen!

Anderson Cooper just welcomed his first child, a boy named Wyatt, into the world and he’s getting help from the same nanny who his BFF Andy Cohen used to help raise his son Benjamin!

Andy revealed the cool news during his radio show on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy.

“I’ve been talking about my nanny [saying] she’s leaving, that she’s gonna go help out a friend, and the moment Anderson announced it I got a bunch of DMs from eagle-eared Radio Andy listeners saying, ‘Wait … is that where your nanny went?’ The answer is yes, that is where my nanny went,” Andy said on the show.

He added, “We had long planned this transition, but I certainly didn’t expect it to happen during a quarantine, of course. So we had to really handle this hand-off from one home to the next very carefully, but we did and she is now with Anderson and I know she’s gonna get Wyatt on a great sleep schedule just like she got Ben.”

“I’m so happy for Anderson,” he said. “We’ve been talking about this for a long time and I have been really enjoying Anderson coming over. His visits with Ben have taken on a special significance since we both knew for a while that Anderson was planning on [becoming a dad] himself.”

Andy‘s son Benjamin was welcomed into the world 15 months ago. Anderson‘s son Wyatt was born on April 27. See his first photos!

Anderson Cooper Welcomes First Child, a Son Named Wyatt!

Amazing news – Anderson Cooper has become a dad!

The 52-year-old CNN anchor announced on Instagram on Thursday night (April 30) that he welcomed his first child – son named Wyatt Morgan Cooper – via surrogate earlier in the week.

“I want to share with you some joyful news. On Monday, I became a father. This is Wyatt Cooper. He is three days old,” Anderson captioned the slideshow. “He is named after my father, who died when I was ten. I hope I can be as good a dad as he was. My son’s middle name is Morgan. It’s a family name on my mom’s side. I know my mom and dad liked the name morgan because I recently found a list they made 52 years ago when they were trying to think of names for me. Wyatt Morgan Cooper. My son. He was 7.2 lbs at birth, and he is sweet, and soft, and healthy and I am beyond happy.”

“As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth,” Anderson continued. “Most of all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing – what she, and all surrogates give to families who cant have children. My surrogate has a beautiful family of her own, a wonderfully supportive husband, and kids, and I am incredibly thankful for all the support they have given Wyatt and me. My family is blessed to have this family in our lives.”

“I do wish my mom and dad and my brother, Carter, were alive to meet Wyatt, but I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing, happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt, and that our family continues,” he concluded the emotional post.

Congratulations to Anderson!!!
