Demi Lovato Talks Bipolar Disorder & Dating with 'Cosmopolitan'

Demi Lovato strikes a pose on the cover of Cosmopolitan‘s July issue, on newsstands June 5.

Here’s what the 19-year-old entertainer had to share with the mag:

On being diagnosed with bipolar disorder: “I felt relieved when I found out. Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it. It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.”

On the direction she’d like her personal life to go in: “I want to be married with kids in 10 years.”

On her dating qualifications: “I don’t have many deal breakers. I’ve done so much in my life, it doesn’t feel right to judge other people. Oh, I know one quality I won’t tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling.”

FYI: Demi is wearing a Cut25 by Yigal Azrouel dress with Meira T cuff and earrings.

She is really pretty and has a great singing voice.

  • Jenny

How many exclusives is she going to give for her bipolar disorder?

  • Amber

She looks great! I’m glad she feels better now, but the fact that she keeps talking about what happened to her is kind of annoying.

  • Dave Franco

Bipolar chicks are good in bed.

  • Lynn

ok so Simon gathered bipolar chicks on his X factor show? this is not promising…

  • emm

I don’t listen to her music or know much else about her besides what’s on these gossip pages… But I feel bad for her. I don’t think she goes into an interview and WANTS to be asked about her disorder, it’s going to come up regardless, and people would attack her and call her names if she said something like “i don’t want to talk about it” or “no comment”… It’s a loose-loose situation :( she gets picked on no matter what.

  • Alaia

No talent, tacky style, bad fake tan, godawful cover and worst of all, milking the only thing that is keeping her relevant.

  • Marcell

Way to completely photoshop out a chunk of her waist. Cosmopolitan fail.

  • Triangle

@Lynn: Um, MEDICATED Bipolars. As someone with bipolar, I can tell you it does not make you crazy or prevent you from being a judge on a TV show. Seriously, research the disorder before you talk about it. Also, did Britney ever confirm that she’s bipolar?

  • Creed

    No one cares! Shut up.

  • rochelle

Loving the headlines around the cover LOL!!!!

  • Viola

You mean the fact that interviewers keep asking about it is annoying.

  • Lily

Her voice is amazing, she’s was the only disney girl who could actually sing but I agree that the fake tan is not flattering, she’s way better with her natural skin tone which is not that pale anyway also I wish she would stop talking or that the interviewers stop asking her about her bipolar and eating disorder issues, she already said way too much about that, in a way it seems like she’s milking everything about the situation, and she doesn’t need to, she’s very talented. I’m happy she could work her problems out, but enough Demi, focus on your music and beautiful voice please.

  • Faith

I actually am receiving help for my issues because of Demi. I was too ashamed to admit that there was something wrong, but after her coming out with her problems I am getting help. So people who talk mess about her telling her story should think about the people she is helping. She looks so amazing on this cover and I know she will be great on X Factor.

  • Bob

Even if she didn’t answer the interviewer’s questions and said “no comments” people will attack her and hate on her. She’ll get hate no matter what since people are morons unfortunately. Anyways.. She looks sexy!

  • somali girl

Why do we need to know about her disorder? Its just for promotion. It had to be something “shocking” to catch the readers eyes.

  • marcus

@Alaia: LOL and you hit the nail on the head.

  • somali girl

To add; is it because Britney has this disorder? Typical promotion of the show.

  • Delphic

@Bob: Well she deserves hate for having no talent!

  • liora

No talent ? Have you ever seen her perform or heard any of her work ? She’s an amazing singer , songwriter , musician and actress . Check for yourself before stating facts

  • David

People keep saying that she keeps mentioning how she had this and that and how it’s annoying. You do know the interviewer makes the questions and she just answers them.I highly doubt she wants to go into every single interview wanting to talk about her problems.People should think more before they decide to say something. On the other hand I’m glad she’s happy and healthy.

  • Effy

@Jenny: I agree! I’m glad she’s getting better, but it’s getting annoying now. Instead of talking about it why doesn’t she do fundraisers or raise awareness for others more?

  • David

    @Effy Charities & foundations supported (10)

Demi Lovato has supported the following charities:

    A Day Made Better
    City of Hope
    Kids Wish Network
    Love Our Children USA
    Red Cross
    Shoe Revolt
    Stand Up To Cancer
    St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
    STOMP Out Bullying

And I think her being so open about her problems have helped others who struggle from the same things and she talks about her problems instead of hiding all of them like a lot of people do.

  • sunnyroberto

Sometimes, I think they do that on purpose. Particularly when the cover girl/lady isn’t a known for sexual hijinks.

  • gg

@Delphic: do you deserve hate for your “no talent”? of course not. we all have talents and you spewing hate doesn’t take hers away from her. i’m sorry you feel the need to be so mean, hopefully you will find your talent some day + stop putting others down for trying to make something of themselves.

  • Effy

    @David: You seem like her #1 fan…

  • David

@Effy haha I’m not I just use facts and my head before I write a comment accusing someone of not doing something.

  • thighmegatampon

I wonder if she has bipolar I or bipolar II disorder bc there’s a big difference in severity between the two..
