Colin Farrell Discusses Using Life Experience for 'Saving Mr. Banks' Role

Colin Farrell looks slick and suave as he leaves an interview at the BBC Radio 1 studios on Thursday (November 28) in London, England.

The 37-year-old actor recently spoke with British GQ about playing Robert Goff Travers, alcoholic father to Mary Poppins author PL Travers, in Saving Mr. Banks.

“It’s weird, because of course you draw from personal experience as an actor. There’s no doubt that stuff that I’ve been through regarding alcohol is in there,” Colin said. “It certainly informed an empathy that I may have had for this character…but at the same time, I really do think that it’s a pothole as an actor that sometimes you can fall into and find yourself drowning in.”

“But I do remember how hard it is to find a way out of it, and I do remember the overwhelming melancholy and self-pity that can accompany the alcoholic. So in remembering it I certainly had a fundamental reference point,” Colin added.
